From the Director
Wow, July already, where does time go? On June 12, several Regional Support Centers and
Community Coalitions partnered with local law enforcement and Walgreens to
conduct very successful Prescription Take Back events. Communities from Kirksville, all the
way to Republic, MO took back over 300 pounds of medication! Check out the pictures of the event in
this newsletter. ACT Missouri hosted a Substance Abuse Prevention
Specialist Training - Train the Trainer / Capacity Building workshop during the
week of June 14. This training now
allows Missouri to have at least one approved SAPST Trainer in nearly every
service region of the state. Between ACT Missouri and the Missouri National
Guard, we have four statewide approved SAPST Trainers. Family Counseling Center of Missouri, Prevention
Resource Center in Columbia and ACT Missouri co-sponsored a 40 hour SAPST
training at the ACT Missouri office the week of June 21. Ten people attended this training and finished
the week with a better understanding of substance abuse prevention and with
increased skills to implement more effective prevention and collaboration in
their own communities. The new fiscal year has begun and ACT Missouri will
be awarding another round of mini-grants for registered coalitions across the
state. The mini-grant application
and submission criteria can be found on the ACT Missouri home page. Technical Assistance and Regional Development Funds
forms have been updated with the goal of making them more user-friendly and
easier to complete. The new forms
can be located on the ACT Missouri Website. Please remember the Prevention Conference, hosted
by ACT Missouri and the Missouri Substance Abuse Prevention Network, is in December. We are still accepting applications for
presenters. If you are interested
in sharing your expertise at this conference, the Call for Presentations Application can also be
found on the ACT Missouri Website. Also, ACT Missouri
is now represented on Facebook! Find us and "like" us to stay current with ACT Missouri, Missouri
substance abuse prevention, and national substance abuse prevention news and
interests. Have a great rest of the summer!

MRN Statewide Council Holds Strategic Planning Retreat
The Missouri Recovery Network statewide council
held its strategic planning retreat in Jefferson City on June 17 and 18 to
chart the pathway for the future.
The council members reviewed the goals which were set and accomplished
during the 2010 fiscal year and discussed the objectives and initiatives they
would like to achieve in the near future.
The creative juices were flowing as ideas were
thrown out on how to bring more awareness, education and public understanding
of addiction and recovery throughout Missouri. Some of the strategies included the creation of clear and
concise fact sheets to further educate the general public on medication
assisted treatment, recovery support services, drug courts, how addiction and
recovery impact the family, and many more topics. The council discussed how best to market recovery to
increase MRN's exposure to the addicted community, as well as the general
public and the formulation of regional recovery forums to encourage and engage
our members in localized advocacy efforts.

SADD National Conference
The Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD)
National Conference was held in Orlando June 27-30 at the Hyatt Grand Cypress
Resort. Nearly 400 youth attended
the annual event. Karen Farris, Missouri Youth Adult Alliance (MYAA)
Project Director and SADD State Coordinator attended the coordinator meeting
prior to the conference. Karen also
presented MYAA's "Operation Alcohol Advertisement Placement" training to about
30 youth and adult advisors at the weekend event. Karen is hoping to increase the number of SADD chapters
in Missouri and to secure funding to support SADD efforts throughout the
state. If you are interested in
forming a SADD chapter in your community, please contact Karen Farris: kfarris@actmissouri.org. You can also call the ACT Missouri
office at (573) 635-6669 or visit www.SADD.org.
