The Importance of Positive Recovery Language
By Judie Didriksen, Regional Representative, Faces and Voices of Recovery and Missouri Recovery Network State Council Co-Chair
The last week-end of August 2009 the Mid-America region of Faces and Voices of Recovery along with the Mid-America Addiction Technology Transfer Center (ATTC) hosted a conference of recovery advocates/stakeholders from the 5 states in the region to discuss recovery language and its value to advocates and the recovery community. Each state was represented by 6 individuals who represented their state recovery activities and the enthusiasm was amazing. Individuals in recovery, family members, state bureaucrats, non-profit leaders, shelter managers, treatment and corrections professionals shared a training curriculum designed to improve the language used to describe the recovery movement. It was an extremely uplifting positive experience for all of the participants.
How Can We Speak About Recovery with One Voice Over the last two years, Faces & Voices of Recovery has been working to find a way to describe and talk about recovery so that people who are not part of the recovery community understand what we mean when we use the word recovery. One of the important findings from our groundbreaking 2004 survey of the general public was that people believe that the word recovery means that someone is trying to stop using alcohol or other drugs. We realized that we needed to find a way to talk about recovery that would allow us to be clear and believable to the general public. Some of the important things that we've learned from our research about how to talk to people about recovery are: 1. Making it personal, so that we have credibility 2. Keeping it simple and in the present tense, so that it's real and understandable 3. Helping people understand that recovery means that you or the person that you care about is no longer using alcohol or other drugs. We do this by moving away from saying in recovery to saying in long-term recovery, talking about stability and mentioning the length of time that the person is in recovery 4. Talking about your recovery ---NOT your addiction 5. Helping people understand that there's more to recovery than not using alcohol or other drugs, but that part of recovery is creating a better life.

Sixth Annual Speak Hard Youth Event to be Held 17th of March 2010 Provided by Sara Swank, MYAA
Speak Hard 2010 will empower Missouri's young adults to "Speak Hard" to their public officials and community leaders about their schools' and communities' issues relating to underage drinking and substance use. Young adults from across the state will have the opportunity to network and share their ideas about reducing underage drinking and sub-stance use in their communities. Through interactive workshops in advocacy, legislative communications and other youth related topics, young adults will receive tools and knowledge so they can confidently "Speak Hard" about community issues on both the local and state level. This year's event at the Truman Building in Jefferson City will kick off with keynote speaker, Ted Weise. In addition to the keynote, Ted will give an adult workshop with take home activities to use with youth groups. His website ( www.tedweise.com) states:
"Known as one of America's best youth leadership development speakers, Ted Wiese works with thousands of students every year to teach and enhance their leadership skills. Ted is in the business of making students believe they can make a difference - and he teaches them how to do it! Ted's dynamic and engaging programs have gained him a strong reputation for delivering results."
The youth tract will feature three workshop times with topics covering a variety of issues such as youth leadership, tobacco, Rx/OTC, how to host alternative activities and others. A separate adult tract with topics relevant to youth advisors will be available for sponsors.
The event will commence with awards to be given to youth demonstrating outstanding prevention work in Missouri. Traditionally, youth march to the Capitol from the Truman Building for a short program in the rotunda and then individually meet with their senators and representatives. Although there is no program scheduled for the rotunda this year, youth are encouraged to meet with their legislators to discuss issues that are relevant to youth in their communities.
MYAA is looking forward to another successful youth advocacy event!
