Faith - check
Academics - check
Service - check
Fun - check

The theme of this year's Catholic Schools Week was Faith, Academics, and Service, but being out of uniform, skiing, rollerskating, reading great books, and shooting hoops made for a fun week as well. All students had a smile on their face during the week. Students completed their service work at Feed My Starving Children. See images of one of the groups by clicking on the picture.

Recent morning of reflection for men of OLP examines Jesus as a model of service
On January 28, nearly 30 men gathered for a relaxing morning of reflection with guest facilitator, Fr. Michael Van Sloan, pastor of St. Stephen's in Anoka, Minnesota. Fr Van Sloan offered many insights on Chapter 13 of the Gospel of John where Jesus washes the feet of his disciples.

In this chapter Jesus models how his life was spent entirely for the benefit of others. Jesus knew that his hour was coming but his life of service prepared him to say yes to giving the ultimate gift of himself for our sake.

Fr. Van Sloan made helpful connections between the Eucharist and service such that being nourished by the Eucharist leads to service to others and in serving others, one opens himself up to God's grace all the more. Also, Jesus shows us that nothing is beneath him - he has a universal concern for others and he reveals to us our own power to do the same - especially for our families and loved ones. Jesus is the model of how to use our gifts and powers correctly - to serve others.

In addition to Fr. Van Sloan's insightful presentation, the men who attended discussed among themselves how we might apply what we have learned in our own lives. There was time for prayer and conversation about how we might look to Jesus as our model. Then the attendees shared a delicious lunch before returning to their day refreshed by this opportunity for reflection on the life of Christ and our call to serve.

Retreats Brought Women Together
This winter we had two retreat opportunities for women in the parish -

1)      "Transitions a Time of Grace"
2)       "Theotokis: Following in the Footsteps of Mary."

The first was a mini-retreat, offered for mothers, and led by Sister Paula Hagen, Jennifer Frenz and Teresa Lassegard. The focus was on recognizing the impact of life transitions on our physical, emotional and spiritual life and finding tools to stay with and lead one through life's transitions. Sr. Paula is piloting this retreat before publishing and asked if we would be interested in participating and providing feedback. 18 women participated.

The second retreat was led by Jackie Witter and 36 women participated. It was a wonderful day, ending with Taize prayer and lunch. Jackie gently challenged all gathered to see and follow a Mary who knew and participated in life with all its joys, sorrows, surprises and disappointments. We laughed as she had us follow Mary after her " yes"  and ponder the depth of her "fiat" as life unfolded and she realized what she had said "yes" to.
