Congratulations and thank you to everyone for your continued hard work and dedication to Special Olympics Edmonton. This year we had great nominees for the "Of the Year"awards.

Coach of the Year
Male coach of the year
Elwin Worobec
Not only does Elwin wear the hat of a coach, he also is involved with Special Olympics Edmonton as the programs chair of the Affiliate Management Committee and as a parent. Elwin is a strong leader and an excellent Head Coach to the Floor Hockey B team. The Strikers won the Team of the Year Award for the 2010 - 2011 season. Elwin has established some great partnerships with outside organizations and his floor hockey team. He is organized, dedicated and is a positive role model for both his athletes and coaches
Female coach of the year
Pat Bennett
A volunteer for almost 15 years, Pat is very knowledgeable in the programs that she volunteers. Pat is both the Team Manager for Floor Hockey D and a Coach with the 5-pin bowling programs at Plaza and Bonnie Doon Bowl. Pat is committed to Special Olympics Edmonton and helps out wherever she can, including providing great leadership and support for SOE's major fundraiser last April.

S teve Rabeeh
Steve is active in three different Special Olympics Edmonton sports but is best known for his participation in Speed Skating. An athlete with Special Olympics Edmonton for 14 years, Steve works tremendously hard to excel on the ice. He exemplifies true commitment, courage and dedication to the sport of speed skating. Steve was outstanding during the 2011 Provincial Winter Games which qualified him to represent Alberta at the 2012 National Winter Games. Steve was a member of the SOE Athlete leadership committee and participated in fundraising initiatives throughout the year.
Female Athlete of the year
Megan Sanders
An athlete with Special Olympics Edmonton for 6 years, Megan participates in Soccer and Athletics. Megan is a great teammate and has excelled as a team leader with the competitive soccer girls team. She shows a great deal of hard work and commitment both on and off the field. Megan completed the 18 km run for the Law Enforcement Torch Run and carried the torch into the opening ceremonies of provincial games and has represented SOE by publicly speaking at two different LETR events.

Team of the Year
2011 Provincial Winter Games Alpine Team
Special Olympics Edmonton's Provincial Alpine team had an extremely successful season. Head coached by Kristyn Power during the 2010-201 1 season, the team trained for the 2011 Provincials for three seasons, including a training trip to Marmot Basin in Jasper Alberta in February 2011. With extremely dedicated and committed athletes and coaches, the Alpine team collected 30 medals; 13 Gold, 12 Silver and 5 Bronze at Provincial Winter Games during the 3 day competition. Each athlete recorded personal bests, and as a result 4 athletes and 2 coaches have been selected to represent Team Alberta at the 2012 Special Olympics National Winter Games.

Volunteer of the Year
Cyndie Annett
Passionate, professional and visionary are three words that have been used to describe our 2010-2011 volunteer of the year Cyndie Annett. Cyndie has been with Special Olympics Edmonton as a Management Committee member and a volunteer with the Alpine Ski program for over 5 years. Cyndie has been a major contributor in SOE's vision, and always puts what's best for SOE athletes at the forefront of everything she does. |
