Though not a true mahogany, Sapele is often used in its place because it is from the same botanical family as mahogany and has many of the same properties.
This reddish brown wood is even sometimes referred to as sapele mahogany. Both are medium hard woods but sapele is the harder wood of the 2 species and has a more reddish color. Both glue and finish well.
When making guitars, some luthiers think sapele is easier to work with than mahogany, and produces a more consistent sound. It also tends to be less expensive and more readily available than Mahogany.
