Speedzone Hosts First Practice Session of 2011

By Jeffrey Sachse

Saturday, April 30, 2011 - Oshkosh, WI. - Promptly at Noon,  several Modifieds rushed onto the 1/3 mile clay oval at the Speedzone Raceway located at the Sunnyview Expo Center in Oshkosh becoming the first cars to take to the raceway since the season came to an end in September of last year.  Before the end of the day some 76 different cars took to the racing surface ushering in the start of the 2011 racing season.
Just 24 hours earlier track conditions were questionable as to whether such a practice session could take place, as heavy rains throughout the week and a late season snowstorm the week prior which had dumped a foot of snow on the raceway,  had left the clay oval with a more than ample supply of water.  However hard work by track officials, right up to the start of practice, allowed the drivers to have a raceable surface for the practice session.  The track held up well throughout the course of the day.

76 Cars Attended Opening Practice

Each of the weekly racing classes were well represented at the session, topped off by a strong showing of 17 Automotive Supply Company Modifieds.  The open wheeled count was further bolstered by  the Speedzone's newest weekly division, as  14 Leon's Frozen Custard Sport Modifieds were also on hand. This solid turnout gives an early indication that the class should start out strong in their first season.

The popular Mille Lite Grand Nationals were represented by 11 competitors, and the Total Power Sales Street Stock division had 9 participants on hand for opening practice.

The entry level Lynn's Service Center Dirt Devil division saw several new drivers make an appearance with 14 cars in the pit area.

In addition to the weekly classes a large turnout of Late Models also took to the track with 11 competitors shaking down their machines.

Cars were allowed to take to the track by division, with cars of relative speed running in joint practice sessions.  No major incidents took place during the day's practice which ended just after 4:00pm.

The next open practice session will be held on Tuesday evening May 10th, from 5:00pm until 9:00pm. Pit admission is just $10 for the practice sessions, while grandstand admission is free.
