Speedzone Car Show Successful at New Venue

By Jeffrey Sachse

Saturday, April 23, 2011 - Oshkosh, WI. - In spite of unseasonably cool temperatures, the 2011 Oshkosh Speedzone Raceway car show proved to be successful in spite of a sudden change in venue.  Originally scheduled for the previous weekend, extremely poor weather conditions delayed the show one week and forced it's relocation.

2011 Car Show

Track co-promoter Jeff Lemiesz managed to contact owners of the Fair Acres Complex in Oshkosh and the primary store in the complex Pick-N-Save and arranged to have the show moved to that location. The grounds are the site of the former

Leo's Speedway which ran successfully until the fairgrounds moved to it's current location, where the Oshkosh Speedzone now resides.Though the shows revamping was on short notice the event proved successful, with several hundred people turning out to see the nearly 20 cars which gathered for the event.

Cars represented each of the five weekly divisions in the show and best appearing car awards were presented based upon popular vote during the event which ran from Noon until 3:00pm.  Winners in each of the five classes were presented trophies.

Veteran racer Charlie Ewald would top the voting in the Automotive Supply Company Modified division.  Ewald, a very popular weekly competitor at the track won the voting over Eddie LeMay Jr.  Ewald has a streak of best appearing wins in the Modified class for the past several years at the pre-season car show.  Charlie's son Chad Ewald would also earn top honors in voting, taking home best appearing car in the Lynn's Service Center Dirt Devil division.

In the closest vote of the day Gordy Lewis edged out Brian Vinney for best appearing car in the Total Power Sales Street Stock division, with Jeff Schmuhl taking top honors in the new Midwest Modified division over rookie Mike Lemiesz.  The class is sponsored by Leon's Frozen Custard which happened to be located directly a crossed the street from the car show.

Rounding out the awards winners for the day was award winner Larry Richards, the defending Miller Lite Grand National division champion earning best appearing honors for that division.

Oshkosh Speedzone Raceway is a 1/3 mile semi-banked clay oval located at the Sunnyview Expo Center which resides near the intersection of Highways 76 and County Trunk Y in Oshkosh.   Weekly racing action begins on Friday Night, May 6th and continues until September.
