Take a Hike!
Knowing God through Creation
We often forget that the Judeo-Christian tradition finds its origin out of the revelation of God as discovered in the wilderness.
Abraham looks up to the stars and learns of the multitude to be blessed through his obedient faith. Moses sees the burning bush and receives his call to help free the children of Israel from their bondage in Egypt. He climbs the mountain to receive the revelation of God. The Israelites cross the river Jordan to enter the blessed land where they will learn to become the people of God. The nation of Israel writes and worships from the poetry of the Psalms which are replete with natural images and metaphors signifying God's revelation and true character. Elijah looks for God in the powerful wind and the torrent of fire, only to find God in the silence of the mountain tops. Jesus is baptized in the waters of the river Jordan and then is driven into the wilderness to have his identity and mission forged and crystallized. Jesus preaches from and is transfigured in great light on mountain tops.
God is revealed in nature. God becomes known to us in the here and now of creation. Stars, bushes, mountains, rivers, the silence of the wilderness - it is through these things and in these places that God is known to us! God is in nature!
Our Judeo-Christian faith is a natural religion as we humans experience and encounter God in the patterns, rhythms and glory of the natural order. Today, or sometime this week, I encourage you to intentionally take a walk around your front yard, your neighborhood or even a sidewalk or path in the woods. During the walk open yourself to this God of, and in nature.
Prayer Walking in Nature:
- Intentional - steps (and breathing)
- Eyes wide open - What do you see?
- Mind and heart open - Silent reflection
- What do you see? Reflect on what is experienced, seen or felt
- Reflection on something you would like to work out and then listen for the response within the walk
- Receive whatever may come
Possibilities for Reflection/Prayer:
- Metaphors / Patterns
- Silence
- Breath Prayer:
- "Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy upon me, a sinner."
- "You alone are God."
- "God alone is enough."
A prayer walk is simply a time when you: Walk Intentionally, Walk Patiently, Walk Expectantly, Walk Openly, and Walk with God. May It Be So This Day, During This Time!!
Get out there and enjoy!

Children's Ministry
It's the most wonderful time of the year. As the school year is ending, likewise our lectionary-based curriculum ends the first Sunday of June.
We will be using a curriculum with an outdoor adventure theme called Summit Seekers for the rest of June and July. The program declares Jesus' love through the exploration of how Joshua led God's people into the promised land. We may be spending some of our time outside (weather permitting). Please feel free to dress your children accordingly.
In August our program takes a break, but we will offer a craft room for pre-k through 2nd grade and the nursery will be open throughout! This is an opportunity or older children to experience "big church."
Your children are a joy.

Marilou Hart, Denise Koch, Gudrun Neumann, Ali Wormington

Adult Christian Formation News
From the desk of Linda Keith, Director of Adult Christian Formation
linda@marymag.com
It's summertime - time to kick back and enjoy a slower, more leisurely pace. Our Adult Formation opportunities have finished their sessions for this part of the calendar year. Now, it's time to enjoy God's presence in worship, in our families, in nature and in all that is offered to us in creation. It is also time to enjoy a book or two on the porch with a glass of lemonade or iced tea! Here is a sampling of what I will be reading this summer. Let me know what is on your reading list as well! Be sure to watch the bulletin and the website for announcements about our class offerings for fall.
Linda's Reading List for Summer 2012:
- How to Think Seriously About the Planet: the case for an environmental conservatism by Roger Scruton
- The Face of God by Roger Scruton
- Make Today Count by John C. Maxwell
- House of Stone by Anthony Shadid
- The Artist's Rule: nurturing your creative soul with monastic wisdom by Christine Valters Paintner
- If Experience is Such a Good Teacher, Why Do I Keep Repeating the Course? by Ellsworth Kalas
- Any of Fanny Flagg's quirky novels
I may find that some of these books are wonderful and some of them...well, not so much. But, part of the fun of reading is that you never know what you might get. Who knows, some of my list may show up in our fall and winter classes!
