Feedback from April's Monthly Meeting

Anne Schroeder led an energy filled and highly interactive session on Designing Learning.  She opened with a get up off your chair and mingle ice breaker.  Everyone was given an envelope which contained half of a puzzle.  Your task was to find your other half. You either had the "What" statement or the "How" statement associated with Training Design Principles.  It only took a few minutes, we all communicated with each other, and we found our better half!

Anne SchroedeerAnne's training design for our introduction to Training Design Principles featured teamwork, collaboration, and short impactful break outs.  Our April meeting not only provided the attendees with knowledge transfer but was fun as well.  Once again the chapter monthly meeting was value added time well spent.  Don't miss the next meeting on May 18th where the topic is Facilitating Organizational Change.

"I thought that I new so much in designing programs.  Well, I learned even more from Anne Schroeder's approach. Our session was very enlightening and it strongly identified the key ingredients for a creative program. " Kathy Choquette

Facilitating Organizational Change

Mark your calendars Everyone!

Our next CPLP Study Group is scheduled for Wednesday, May 25 at 5:30 p.m. You can come right after work. We will meet at Books-a-Million at the Forum. The Study Group will discuss Facilitating Organizational Change.

CPLP STUDY GROUP April 27th Feedback

The CPLP Study Group met on Wednesday, April 27, to discuss the topic, Designing Learning.  This same topic was covered by Anne Schroeder at the monthly ASTD meeting on April 20.  Her presentation was interactive and covered how to complete a successful training design.

The intent of the CPLP Study Group is to complement the monthly meetings with additional specifics in the Areas of Expertise (AOE).  Our goal is to help anyone interested in the topic and those planning to take the CPLP certification with additional study and discussion time.

What was different about this session?  To add some structure we used the flash cards from the CPLP Study Guide Packet.  This was a bit like playing trivial pursuit except all of the questions were centered on designing learning.  The team had fun answering the questions and found that we all learned something.

Another advantage of this study group is that we can talk with other professionals in our area and learn some new concepts just through our sharing, discussing and of course drinking the coffee of our choice!

Since our members indicated an interest in learning more about the nine AOEs in the CPLP Certification, we invite everyone to attend-whether or not you are interested in the certification exam.  Over the course of the year the study group will review all nine AOEs.  The CPLP AOEs comprise the following topics.

1.     Designing Learning

2.     Delivering Training

3.     Improving Human Performance

4.     Measuring and Evaluating

5.     Facilitating Organizational Change

6.     Managing the Learning Function

7.     Coaching

8.     Managing Organizational Knowledge

9.     Career Planning and Talent Management

President's Message
President Lorna Kibbey

As we move quickly from Spring to Summer, the excitement continues to build with ASTD SW FL! Our meetings this year are amazing - informative and thought provoking. This year has been most enjoyable - our chapter is active and growing. People are seeking us out as our reputation for professional excellence spreads.

I had an interesting discussion with my daughter this week. She tells me it's hard being the kid of a motivational speaker. She says I'm always eager to point out the good and sometimes a person just wants to whine. Well my friends, we've got nothing to whine about in SW FL. Here are just a few things I'm really excited about!

ˇ       I'm very excited to welcome new members and very thankful to everyone who has renewed.

ˇ       As you know, we meet the third Wednesday of every month. If that isn't fun enough, we also have a meeting the fourth Wednesday for a more in depth discussion of our meeting topic. As much as I love our regular meeting, I thoroughly enjoy the study group meeting that happens the week after.

ˇ       We have been nominated for a National Award! We'll find out this summer if we won - either way, this is a first for our Chapter.

ˇ       Your Board is doing a fantastic job of working toward the goals we set for the year!

ˇ       Keiser University's Director of Student Services (Therese Cinotto) contacted me and I accepted her invitation for a tour of their Fort Myers facilities. I really enjoyed meeting the folks there and was quite impressed with what they are doing. Word is that we'll get two new members as a result and I'm sure we'll have a strong relationship in the future.

ˇ       FGCU's Florida Institute of Government (Joanne Hartke) has made it possible for us to have our monthly meetings in a most excellent environment!

ˇ       The ASTD International Convention and Exposition will be in Orlando this year - May 22 through 25. You can find more information on the National Website. I'll be attending for the first time (there's still time to come volunteer with me - one day of volunteer work = one day at the conference).

There's more but I'll stop for now with one last thing. I'm very excited that you can learn more about ALL of these things on our happening new website www.astdswfl.org.

I'm always open for your input. You can call or write anytime - or, you can use our blog at www.astdswfl.org.

Thanks to everyone!

May 18, 2011 Chapter Meeting

Facilitating Organizational Change

Join us for the monthly meeting of the Southwest Florida Chapter of ASTD.

Leading, managing, and facilitating change within organizations requires the understanding of systems. How systems affect processes and where a systematic solution is not only useful but central to the facilitation of organizational change.

What motivates the employees will vary, but your understanding of motivating factors is perhaps the most critical element to consider when implementing organizational change to minimize resistance, turnover, and failure to institutionalize the change.

Effective communication is tied directly to successful organizational change.

On our ongoing journey to offer sessions based on the ASTD Areas of Expertise, please join Carol Marlow for an enlightening session discussing the key ingredients for facilitating organizational change!
