September/2011

Greetings!

We're proud and excited to feature two internationally recognized artists for our September 1st art opening here at Mockingbird Gallery.  "Wild and Free" is a two-person show featuring the special talents of sculptor T.D. Kelsey and wildlife painter Lindsay Scott.  Both of these artists share a passion for Africa, its wildlife and their concern for conservation of wildlife worldwide.  T.D.'s loose, impressionistic style is in stark contrast to Lindsay's very detailed paintings and pencil drawings but they complement one another very well.  We hope you will join us here at the gallery on Thursday night, September 1st for the grand opening of the show, or on Friday night, the 2nd, for our First Friday art walk.  You'll be in for a treat!

Once again, we are so honored and proud to have two of our Mockingbird Gallery artists featured in a nationally published art magazine.  The September issue of Western Art Collector has a wonderful article on Lindsay Scott and T.D. Kelsey.  If you haven't already seen the article, we recommend you take a look.

In this issue we're introducing a feature called "Honors and Achievements", where we'll be sharing with you the latest accomplishments and awards received  by our talented Mockingbird Gallery artists.  We'll be checking in with Lorenzo Chavez today!

In addition to the new artwork by T.D. Kelsey and Lindsay Scott, we have also received fresh new pieces in from Rodd Ambroson, Mick Doellinger, Rick Graham, Pamela Claflin and others.  You'll find them in our New Works section on the Mockingbird website.  Check them out and let us know what you think.

Thanks for allowing us to stay in touch and we hope you enjoy this September issue of the Mockingbird Gallery Newsletter!

Lindsay Scott

Internationally renowned artist Lindsay Scott grew up in her home country of Zimbabwe and developed a love and respect for the natural world.  In her oil paintings and drawings, she captures the many moods of the magnificent creatures that go about their daily lives in the vast and fascinating arena of Africa.

"It's so amazing to be out there in Africa in the evening.  If elephants are relaxed, they're talking to each other and you'll hear their ears flapping or their stomachs rumbling.  Those are the kinds of experiences that really excite me, and they're what I try - in some small way - to capture in my work."

Her early training as an illustrator, botanical researcher and biologist allows her to capture in exact detail the life and spirit of wildlife.  Her primary objective is to preserve this beauty for future generations.

T.D. Kelsey

T.D. Kelsey

T.D. Kelsey's work reflects a keen interest in wildlife conservation.  His expressive bronze sculptures come to life and reflect the energy, personality and movement of range animals and wild horses in Texas.  His love of sculpture is based on his rodeo career and ranch life.  When he was young he created a lot of artwork but says he wasn't encouraged at home.

"On a ranch there's a lot of work to do.  I was kind of a closet artist, I guess you'd call it -- after dark, under dim light, that sort of thing, when you couldn't really do anything else.  Then it wasn't frowned upon as much."

Beyond that, Kelsey has no formal training in the arts.  His volumes of knowledge about the animals he sculpts come from years of riding saddle broncs in rodeos, training cutting horses, ranching and world travel.   T.D. raises Longhorn cattle on his Texas ranch, and he is passionate about seeing the wildlife and range animals firsthand.  He then recreates his vision in a bold and impressionistic style.

Lorenzo Chavez

We've just received four beautiful new works from Lorenzo Chavez along with some updates on his career that we would love to share with you.

Lorenzo was just juried into the 39th Annual Pastel Society of America Exhibition which is held at the National Arts Club in New York City.  The exhibition is scheduled for September of 2011.  He was also recently awarded a signature membership to the Society of American Impressionists and will have a painting featured in their October, 2011 exhibition in Carmel, California!  As if that wasn't enough, he has also been invited to be part of a book of internationally known pastel artists which will be published in France.  He promises to keep us updated on that project.

Congratulations Lorenzo on all of these wonderful career achievements.  We're honored to be representing you here at Mockingbird Gallery!
