Greetings!
Wow! That was our first reaction when we looked around at all the beautiful new paintings coming in for the August 5th First Friday Art Walk and, that's what we think your reaction will be also. In this issue of the Mockingbird Gallery Newsletter we'll be focusing on "Sacred Spaces", a two-person show featuring work by Dawn Emerson and Ken Roth, local artists who live and work right here in the high desert of Central Oregon. Both of these artists are constantly pushing themselves to explore new ways of expression in their art, whether it be figurative, wildlife, still-life or landscapes. These fresh new works give you a wonderful example of their individual "eclectic inspiration."
We recently sent out our new semi-annual mailer with pictures and information for the August thru December, 2011 exhibition schedule and featured artists. In this issue you will find a link that will take you to a PDF version of the mailer.
In case you haven't seen the August issue of Southwest Art magazine, please take a look at the article on our very own Richard McKinley. When one of our artists is featured in a magazine as special as Southwest Art, we are proud and happy to share it with all of you. This article only adds to a long list of honors Richard has received in recent years.
What's new at Mockingbird Gallery? In this issue we're delighted and excited to introduce a talented Colorado artist to you by the name of John DeMott. John is a celebrated western painter of wildlife, Northern Plains Indians and various other frontier characters. His style, which he calls "historical realism", is a combination of impressionism and realism. He is recognized as one of the top American western painters of our time.
Also, along with new works in from John DeMott, Ken Roth and Dawn Emerson, you'll want to check out our New Works page on the Mockingbird Gallery website to see some other exciting new offerings from our talented group of Mockingbird Gallery artists. See below for more!
Thanks for allowing us to stay in touch and we hope you enjoy this August issue of the Mockingbird Gallery Newsletter!

Dawn Emerson
|
Dawn Emerson enjoys the immediacy of pastel which allows her to capture the movement and energy of her subjects. "My subjects of choice are the human figure (including portraiture), wild horses and ravens, rocks and waterscapes. Each rendering evokes a strong sense of mood, presence or movement." Dawn was fortunate to study pastel portraiture with legendary artist Harley Brown and pastel landscape artist Albert Handell. "Pastel felt familiar to me the first time I tried it. It is a humble, yet powerfully expressive medium. It is direct and immediate and it requires no preparation or drying, which suits my rather impulsive and impatient nature." She consistently brings out the movement, strength and mood of her subjects through her dynamic line and glowing gem-like color notes. "I paint to connect with the people, places and animals I see and admire them for their beauty, power and sense of purpose."

"Ruby Slippers" 20 x 20 Pastel by Dawn Emerson
|
"I strive to blend my love of Eastern and Western approaches to painting by combining ink with pastel. I most recently explored ways to combine the textural potential of printmaking including combining pastel with monoprint."
Dawn lives with her husband Bruce on 5 acres in the volcanic high desert plateau of Central Oregon. She teaches figure drawing at Central Oregon Community College and teaches pastel workshops in private and public venues throughout the United States.
Dawn is an award-winning signature member of the Pastel Society of America and the Pastel Society of the West Coast.

Ken Roth
|
Ken Roth was drawn to Bend, Oregon where he lives with his family, because of its natural beauty including the Central Oregon landscape, rivers and mountains. He is a diverse oil painter who is inspired by the beauty of nature. He paints in the plein air tradition, and his subjects also include still life, human figures and wildlife. Ken creates art for his soul.
"I'm not looking to capture what I see in the field, but rather to evoke that same feeling of what I'm looking at. It's representational but it's also what I'm thinking about when I put the paint down."

"Twilight" 40 x 30 Oil by Ken Roth
|
Nature is a point of departure and inspiration. It is the impression that counts, and Ken's vision unfolds in a number of ways. Some of his landscapes are recognizable Central Oregon monuments while others only hint at their origins with a swirl of abstract color and light. He concentrates on "the life of the paint." His main concern is the formal presentation of the paintings, whether they are abstract or representational.
Ken has studied under Spanish master Sebastion Capella, Russian impressionist Ovanes Berberian and American painter Scott Christensen. Capella's encouragement to simplify a painting and to seek the most fundamental shape, value and color organization has strengthened Ken's approach to design. Ken explores his design language in imaginative ways and still remains faithful to the subject. His contemporary impression of river reflections and colorful vegetation on the banks of the river illustrate this approach.

MISTY MEMORIES with RICHARD McKINLEY

Richard McKinley paints transcendent scenes of the landscape in Oregon and beyond
 | | August, 2011 issue of Southwest Art magazine |
We're pleased to share this wonderful article in the August, 2011 issue of Southwest Art magazine on our very own Richard McKinley. Richard was born and raised in the Rogue Valley of Oregon, and spent his youth growing up with the rivers and mountains of that special region. It is from those subjects that he has received much of his inspiration. | |

INTRODUCING: JOHN DEMOTT
| | |
Painter of Historical Realism
 | |
John DeMott
|
This month we're very proud and excited to be introducing the work of John DeMott to our Mockingbird Gallery collectors. From his home and studio in Loveland, Colorado, John paints incredibly accurate depictions of the American West during the 1850's to the turn of the century. In his search to conjure up on canvas the most authentic depictions of that Western era, John does more than work from models. His method of painting can include months of research on countless details including locations, clothing, adornment, tools, activities and historical events around an envisioned scene. His style, which he calls, "Historical Realism", combines impressionism and realism, and includes wildlife, Northern Plains figures and various frontier characters.

"Northern Plains - Study" 10 x 8 Oil by John DeMott
|
DeMott's goal is to tell a story, provide enough information, and express a feeling without painting every tiny detail.
"I think the best paintings in museums and collections are simple paintings. As I grow, I learn to say more with less. I just keep going in the process, and I hope when it's all over and done, I'll have left a body of work to be proud of. As traces of the old West slowly disappear and this landscape disappears, I want to give people a sense of what was going on here two hundred years ago."
We've just received our first three oils from John and they are now up on the website. Please follow this link to his page and enjoy!
