June/2011

Greetings!

You're in for a real treat this month as we open our First Friday show on June 3rd, "American Masters," and we think you're going to love it.  We'll be featuring new works by Joseph Alleman, Delbert Gish, Eric Jacobsen and Fran Kievet.  We expect that all four artists will be in the gallery for the show opening so please join us and meet the talented folks who create these beautiful works of art.

Be sure to check out an exciting new feature this month we're calling "Before and After."  Craig Zuger has graciously agreed to create a step-by-step demonstration, including pictures and text, showing the development of a painting from start to finish.  This is our first attempt at breaking down the painting process and showing you what goes into creating a finished work of art.  We hope you find it as fascinating and educational as we did and, as always, we welcome your feedback!

Want an idea for a delightful Saturday excursion?  Here's a great suggestion.  Norma Holmes is hosting an Open Studio Show at her home (16845 Varco Road, Bend, OR) on Saturday, June 18th, 2011 from 10am - 7pm.  You will be able to view new paintings and "finished" studies destined for Norma's book in progress... "a painted travel journal and art resource directory of Eastern Oregon."  Refreshments will be served.

Just a reminder....If you weren't able to attend the Broken Top show for Joey VanBlokland last week, you still have an opportunity.  Joey's show will be up and available to view at the Broken Top Club through June 20th.

We have just received new work from H. Shane Ross and Mick Doellinger.  Be sure and check them out the next time you visit the gallery or view them online at

www.mockingbird-gallery.com.

Thanks for allowing us to stay in touch and we hope you enjoy this issue!

Heading South by Joesph Alleman
"Heading South" 7x9 Watercolor by Joseph Alleman

Watercolorist and oil painter Joseph Alleman paints visionary subjects of the rural West.  Residing in northern Utah's Cache Valley, Joseph finds inspiration in the land, towns and people which make the region unique.  "There is beauty within the everyday and ordinary that only painting can reveal."  His work draws national attention and has been featured regularly in the American Art Collector, Art of the West, Watercolor Artist, Southwest Art and the Artist's magazine.

Fall Harvest by Delbert Gish
"Fall Harvest" 20x29 Oil by Delbert Gish

Delbert Gish is known for his still life, portrait and landscape paintings, and he considers himself a realist painter.  He studied under David Leffel, a master painter of portraits and still life, and Russian Impressionist Sergei Bongart.  Delbert's work is reminiscent of the Dutch and Flemish painters of the 17th century.

Summer Storm by Eric Jacobsen
"Summer Storm" 24x36 Oil by Eric Jacobsen

Eric Jacobsen's oil paintings evoke a sense of serenity and the feeling of wonder he has for nature.  Eric is a "plein air" painter who takes his oils and canvases wherever he goes, setting up on site and working until his painting is finished.  The end result is fresh, spontaneous and full of vitality.   "It is most important to me that my paintings convey a certain mood.  I want them to be felt by the viewer without his or her having to analyze or think about them."

Ever Watchful by Fran Kievet
"Ever Watchful" 40x30 Oil by Fran Kievet

For forty years Fran Kievet has been observing, questioning, analyzing and practicing the visual arts as a graphic designer and as a painter.  Her work encompasses figurative, landscape, still life and wildlife, and her primary medium is oil.  Whatever the subject matter, her splendid sense of design and color guides the viewer's eye throughout the composition.  "It is the passion to create works that visually, as well as subconsciously, stir the emotions and enliven the spirit that keep painting forever exciting."  Fran is a member of Oil Painters of America, Northwest Pastel Society and Women Arts of the West.  Her work is eagerly collected by a growing number of collectors throughout the United States.

The progression of a painting

This month we're introducing an exciting new feature called "Before and After", where we'll be documenting the creative process of painting and sculpting through some of the talented artists represented here at Mockingbird Gallery.

OPA artist, Craig Zuger from Dallas, Oregon has been kind enough to share his painting process with us through a step-by-step demonstration, including pictures and text, showing the development of an oil painting from start to finish.  We hope you find it as fascinating and educational as we did!

Thank you Craig for helping us to better understand all that goes into the planning and execution of a successful work of art, and congratulations on "The Still of Winter".  It's beautiful!
