May/2011

Greetings!

Finally!  We think it's safe to say Spring has arrived and long-awaited sunshine has returned to Central Oregon.  We think you'll be pleased to see the changes inside Mockingbird this month as well.  Last weekend my dad and I made a trip to Idaho to meet up with Utah artist, Steven Lee Adams and we picked up 21 new works of art for this month's feature show.  We're very excited about this beautiful body of work and encourage you to come in and take a look or check out our website to view the pieces online.

How many of you caught our very own Ken Roth on OPB's Oregon Art Beat a couple of weeks ago?  It was filmed in Bend, a portion outdoors (plein air) and the rest at Ken's home studio.  The interviewer explored Ken's approach to painting and his use of color.  Congratulations Ken!

If you don't yet have plans for the third Thursday of May, check out the Art Walk at the Broken Top Club featuring Joey VanBlokland's beautiful pastels.  The date is Thursday, May 19, 2011, 5PM - 8PM.

We're excited to introduce a brand new artist at Mockingbird Gallery this month.  Hib Sabin is a sculptor who hails from Santa Fe, New Mexico.  He creates masks, spirit sticks, bowls and boats incorporating wolves, owls, ravens, bears and eagles into his art.  His goal is to imbue a spiritual energy into each of his art pieces.

We hope you enjoy our May, 2011 issue of the Mockingbird Gallery Newsletter and thank you again for allowing us to stay in touch.

Solo Show for Steven Lee Adams

Opens Friday, May 6th, 2011

Please join us on First Friday, May 6th from 5 to 9 pm when we present "Oil on Canvas", new works by Utah artist Steven Lee Adams.  Come meet Steven and listen to Rich Hurdle and Friends who will provide jazz music from 5 to 9 pm during the First Friday Art Walk.  The exhibit will continue through the end of May.

Steven Lee Adams is a master at seeing what ordinarily goes unseen.  His goal is not to portray the majesty of Nature, but rather to bring to our attention the majestic in the deceptively ordinary.  If one studies a scene in Nature long enough, certain subtle but captivating elements begin to reveal themselves.  This is the realm that Steven loves to explore.  He chooses to look past the spectacular vista, and focuses instead on the quiet but equally spectacular scenery nearby.  His strong sense of color and composition carry his paintings toward a deafening crescendo that barely makes a sound.  This is the paradox of a Steven Lee Adams oil painting.  The reward comes if you allow the painting to quietly emerge and reveal itself to you.

Steven is a poetic painter and his images and colors relate to an emotional or spiritual sense that he feels.  He allows room for the viewer's life experience to fill in the gaps, often creating a personal and emotional bond between the viewer and the painting.

Check out the April 2011 Southwest Art magazine for a feature article on Steven Lee Adams.

Hib Sabin

Santa Fe wood carver, Hib Sabin, joins Mockingbird Gallery.

It's always fun to introduce a special new artist to our collectors, and this month we're excited to welcome Santa Fe, New Mexico wood carver Hib Sabin into the gallery!

Hib Sabin creates masks, spirit sticks, amulets, spirit bowls and boats, often incorporating wolves, owls, ravens, bears, coyotes and eagles into his art pieces.

His painted wood carvings and the bronzes derived from them, are not only distinct and original, they inspire conversation between the artist and collector.

Please click on the photo of Hib above to be taken to our website bio where you can learn more about this fascinating new member of the Mockingbird team and we'll look forward to showing you his new works the next time you come in for a visit.
