April/2011

Greetings!

Can you believe it's April already?  We welcome Spring and turn a keen eye toward nature, looking for the signs that another season is upon us.  Even though it may be difficult to recognize the signs of Spring in Central Oregon, one visit this month to Mockingbird Gallery will convince you that the season has arrived!  Our featured artist this month, Edwin Koch, paints the natural beauty of everyday life...which includes, dahlias, tulips, pansies and other flowers that grow in his personal gardens.  Edwin's photo-realistic still-lifes embody the beauty and quietness that can be found in nature as well as other common objects we encounter in our everyday world.

In this newsletter, we will be taking a look at Steven Lee Adams and Lorenzo Chavez; two of our Mockingbird Gallery artists who have been honored with articles in the April issue of Southwest Art magazine, and we'll also give you a look at our April through July gallery mailer and finish up with some New Works.

It's been fun for us to stay in touch with you through our monthly newsletter and we would like to thank all of you who have responded with positive feedback.  Thank you also for following Mockingbird Gallery on facebook and we'll be looking forward to hearing from you!

   Solo Show for Edwin Koch

  Opens Friday, April 1st, 2011

Oregon artist Edwin Koch is a realist, and some have described his style as Super Realism.  Through the use of oil on apple wood panels, Edwin strives to use classical values to guide his picture making decisions such as objectivity, formality, balance, simplicity, dignity, restraint and austerity.  His still life paintings have an almost luminescent clarity.  Upon closer examination the viewer finds a deeper clarity - a subtle world of intricate and unusual harmonies, which seem to transform disparate shapes into a single enchanting pattern.  Edwin spends a lengthy amount of time, 250 to 500 hours per painting, to achieve striking effects through a combination of painterly techniques, artistic intuition and a meticulous attention to detail.

"Edwin's surfaces seduce the viewer with their complicated simplicity, drawing us into a world of beauty and order, subtlety and surprise.  His art urges us to look again and then to look more closely - to find the deeper clarity that he has discovered in his subject matter and that he allows us to discover, and enjoy, as well." (James Lilliefors)

What a treat!  Here's another terrific article in the current issue of Southwest Art magazine featuring our very own Lorenzo Chavez!  Reed Glenn has written a compelling article highlighting the early experiences that inspired Lorenzo to pursue his impressive fine art career. It's a great opportunity for us to get to know Lorenzo better and share his immense talents with a larger audience.  Thank you again Southwest Art, for focusing on another very deserving Mockingbird Gallery artist!
