A Message From the Head of School
| | Dear Parents and Students, It is my pleasure to wish you all a Chanukah Sameach and to marvel at the fact that the school year has been passing so quickly. We are excited for the School-Wide Chanukah Dinner on December 7th and are proud of the various chesed drives that our students have organized to collect food, costumes and toys to ensure that the needs of others are met as we celebrate Chanukah with friends and family. One of the special features of Chanukah is that the mitzvot associated with the chag, the lighting of the menorah and the recitation of special tefillot of hodaah (gratitude), are entirely spiritual. Unlike, Purim, which has many other similarities to Chanukah, we have no mitzva for a festive meal or for gifts of food. Instead, the mitzvot of Chanukah focus our attention on the spiritual, on increasing the light and on the celebration of the covenantal relation of Hashem to Klal Yisrael. At Central, we are privileged to live in a community, surround ourselves with people and friends who engage daily in the pursuit of increasing the light of Torah and Mitzvot. May the days of Chanukah help us to increase our appreciation of the learning and living of Torah that are a part of our everyday lives. We are very excited to introduce our newly updated "Central Update." We are now, also, sending this weekly newsletter via email. So, be sure to check your inbox or register your email address on our website www.yuhsg.org if you haven't received this week's email edition. Many thanks to Mrs. Michele Zoltan and to Ms. Denah Emerson for their efforts in bringing this publication to our school community.
Wishing you all a Chanukah Sameach and a Shabbat Shalom, CB Neugroschl |
Taking The Long View | |
The Albert Einstein College of Medicine has launched a fascinating new website (called SuperAgers.com), which features the latest information on advances in aging-related research at Einstein. The Longevity Genes Project (which has evolved into the "LonGenity" research study) is the work of endocrinologist Dr. Nir Barzilai, Director of Einstein's Institute of Aging Research, and his team of researchers, coordinators, and volunteers. As described in a recent edition of YU News, the project's more than ten years of research is beginning "to unlock the genetic code for longevity and identify the unique genotypes and phenotypes that protect against age-related diseases." More than 500 centenarians and near-centenarians, as well as more than 700 of their children, have participated in the study, and the new website features profiles of some of these remarkable individuals.
We at Central are pleased to note our own involvement in this ground-breaking research: the students who have worked in the labs of the Institute of Aging Research over the years as part of the YUHSG/AECOM Summer Research Internship Program. They include: alumna Ariel Barnehama ('08), currently pre-med at Brandeis; alumna and aspiring pharmacist Debora Rasad ('09); recent graduate Marisa Siegel ('10), studying at the University of Pittsburgh; current senior Lila Bleich (2nd place winner, 11th-12th grade division, in last year's March of Dimes Nelson Rosenthal Convocation Essay Competition); and current juniors Kathy Benhamou and Julia Landsberg.

"Athletes Giving Back"
Central's sports teams have launched the "Athletes Giving Back" chesed program to contribute to the community over the course of the school year... and the Tennis Team has started things off by "serving up an ace:" raising $300 for Emunah of America through the Lord and Taylor "Shop Smart, Do Good" program. Athletic Director Mrs. Lynda Smith reports that it was "so much fun" running into all the girls and their families that evening that her husband thought she had gotten lost! Our Varsity and JV Basketball players will be providing some valuable "assists" as they begin coordinating their "Chanukah Giving Basket" project for children and teenagers who are not as fortunate as the members of the Central family. Stay tuned for further details of this team-building, team-playing effort.
From The Sports Desk
JV Basketball scored a decisive victory over NSHA, coming out in a "suffocating full court press," and taking control of the game from the outset. Mrs. Smith tells us that we led 17-6 after one quarter, and 34-10 at the half. With our knowledge of North Shore's history of second half comebacks against us, we kept the pressure on with our half court zone press, scoring the first 8 points of the third quarter. With the game securely in hand with a 42-10 lead, we then slowed down the pace and gave extended playing time to all our players. Our dominance over "our rivals from Great Neck" turned out to be a real crowd pleaser!
In another match-up against NSHA, our Varsity Volleyball Team won two out of three games on defense. Our players were strong on serve receive and didn't give our opponents many points on their serves. Only one server presented a real challenge, but Central made the necessary adjustment. Mrs. Smith reports that we were also "strong at the net," ready and able to spike the ball back when it came over. The final scores: 18-25, 25-17, 21-15. Honorable mention to junior Gabby Segal (12 points in Game 2, 5 points in Game 3), senior Gabi Katz (3 points in Game 3), senior Ayelet Abelow (3 points in Game 3), and junior Talia Liebman (3 points in Game 1).
And in a "holiday classic:" the "Turkey Trot" 1/3 mile run, with class winners Ephrat Alon (with a time of 2:10), and Raquel Plaut (with a school record time of 1:46). Kudos, too, to "most improved" Sara Shenas, Allie Staschover, and Loren Hochman.

A Positive Spin | |
We're anticipating a Chanukah week filled with activity and meaning - a December 7th CSI (Central Service Initiative) mission for 9th and 10th graders, a December 8th CSI mission for juniors and seniors, and the exciting December 7th after-school Chanukah dinner/chagigah, with our special guests from OHEL.
Join us for candle-lighting, dancing, Carlos and Gabby's, and much more! Details to follow!

Celebratory Occasions (and food, of course!)
Grade luncheons and creative menus on last week's schedule...
For the 9th graders, it was "make your own sundae," a competitive game of "Family Feud," and a dvar Torah from Michal Leibowitz.
10th grade? "Make your own dreidel" (a time-honored holiday tradition at Central, thanks to Mrs. Arieh).
The 11th grade luncheon had a Thanksgiving theme, complete with a dvar Torah by Zahava Moskowitz on the timely subject of hakarat ha-tov.
The 12th graders had their very own tea party (shades of the Mad Hatter!) with appreciation to Rivka Apfel for her dvar Torah.
And while we're keeping an eye on the holiday calendar, the "Creative Cuisine" Club (advised by Ms. Denah Emerson and Ms. Miriam Borenstein) performed some delicious artistry last week (candy corn and Oreo cookies, anyone?) And we were certainly "thankful" for the results!

Masterpiece Mystery (à la Française!) |
We're eagerly awaiting the publication of a collaborative literary project, courtesy of Mme. Nussbaum's French III students. A reading assignment of a short story crime mystery was the catalyst for the composition of an original work in the same genre. The students themselves suggested a children's picture book, and the result is "Vol au Louvre" by Jenny Elberg, Julie Katz, Orelle Khalili, and Kathy Benhamou, with illustrations by Kathy Benhamou, and accompanying English translation by Orelle Khalili.

The Campus Connection | |
Activism on the College Scene...
When Netanella Refael (YUHSG '07) was a freshman at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, she was part of a small Jewish population looking to attract more Jewish students to the campus. "We decided that the best way to do so (was) to bring Hillel back to John Jay." She became one of the founders of the new Hillel and served as its Treasurer. Today, as a senior pursuing a B.A. in Forensic Psychology, Netanella is President of Hillel, and she reports that the Jewish population has grown so much that the school is trying to add a small kosher cafeteria to a new campus building currently under construction.
Netanella's activism is also playing out on a larger and more ambitious canvas. She is the New York Campus Coordinator for "Hasbara Fellowships," a program spearheaded by Aish International, in conjunction with Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Hasbara brings hundreds of students to Israel every year, providing them with the education, training, information and tools to enable them to return to their colleges as "passionate, dedicated and effective pro-Israel advocates." Netanella provides students in New York colleges with access to educational material, programs, and speakers, and while the focus is on the college campus, the information provided is offered to "anyone who is interested." The Hasbara website itself notes that Netanella is "very excited to work with students... who are as passionate as she is about Israel Activism."
