Joyful Babies
Joyful Babies
Greetings!
Sally Lomas Joyful Babies

A warm hello to all Joyful families. It has been a pleasure welcoming you to our Birthlight yoga classes. Thanks to our lovely team of teachers many parents and babies have had a very positive experience of pregnancy, birth and the early months.

On the 27th September I am starting a new tiny baby class on Thursdays, 12.00 - 1.00pm at the Meadows centre. Sessions will include massage, mini yoga and ways to sooth your baby. For mums we have a specially designed sequence of moves to help you to gently recover your core strength and of course time to relax and chat or even sleep if you need!

My next active birth workshop is on Saturday 6th October, at the Physic Oakington Therapy Centre. It's an enlightening, fun and informal workshop which explores ways in which you can enhance the experience of your baby's birth.

I would like to welcome Bryony who is taking over the baby yoga classes at the Box café in Norfolk Street on Friday mornings. She is an inspiring teacher so do come along and join a class, you can relax and chat afterwards in the café which has an outdoor area too. Beccie is taking a break from teaching as she has just given birth to her 3rd child Hattie. Congratulations!! Bryony is also starting New Parent and Baby Yoga class at St Andrews Church Centre in Cherry Hinton from Autumn. This six week course will run from 18th October to 8th November and is suitable for babies from 2 months to mobile. Come have a stretch with your little ones in this new venue, nestled in the beautiful greenery of the Church grounds.

Welcome also to Tiffany who is offering some small specialised Birthlight classes in Cambridge. Sally's passion for birthing and babies began with the birth of her daughter 24 years ago. Now 3 children later and after many years of training with pioneers Francoise Freedman and Janet Balaskas, Sally balances teaching local classes in Cambridge with travelling internationally to represent birthlight the foremost organisation offering teacher trainings internationally.  Birthlight is now represented in many countries in Europe and as far afield as Singapore, Hong Kong,Taiwan, Russia and Australia. Sally is also a Montessori teacher and trained counsellor and has enjoyed integrating the knowledge gained into her teachings.

Sally created Joyful babies to offer birthlight classes in Cambridge and has been joined by several other birthlight teachers to give you the opportunity to attend a wide variety of classes. You can be assured of high quality professional teaching in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere. Its been wonderful to work together and share our thoughts and ideas.

Meet the teacher - Karin Ekland
Karin
I have practiced yoga for the last 12 years and taught since 2005. Before my teacher training I took some time off my job in an art organisation in London, to go to Mysore in India. There I studied Ashtanga yoga and when I returned to London I decided to train as a yoga teacher with Lara Baumann, OM Station. When I became pregnant with my fist child I also trained as a pregnancy yoga teacher with the inspirational Dr. Francoise Freedman, the founder of Birthlight. The training greatly helped me during my pregnancy and also to go through labour with a sense of confidence and calm.

I lived on the Isle of Mull in the Hebrides for three years before my family and I moved to Cambridge, where I am currently studying for an MA in Children's Book Illustration at Anglia Ruskin University. I now teach a popular and welcoming pregnancy class in Central Cambridge. The class has a warm and relaxed atmosphere. Each class follows a similar pattern working through the whole body with a mixture of traditional yoga postures and specially adapted postures for pregnancy, with the aim to relax and strengthen the body. Pregnancy yoga is an ideal form of exercise for pregnant women and it can help to alleviate some of the physical discomforts and minor ailments associated with pregnancy in a safe way. Some classes are specially focused on alignment, pelvic girdle pain or other areas of the body. Each class also has some breathing exercises and focused relaxation. I have now been teaching Pregnancy Yoga in Cambridge for over two years, and already I am seeing some mothers for their second babies.

It has been wonderful working with mums and babies in our community, being part of their journey through pregnancy, birth and early motherhood. I am pleased to be joined with Sally Lomas and Joyful Babies teaching the Monday evening classes at Parkside now on a regular basis. The Friday morning Trumpington classes are less busy but also going really well. Trumpington Pavilion is a lovely venue during the day, recently refurbished with the sun streaming through the windows. With my background as a midwife, I particularly enjoy offering birthlight classes where I hope women feel nurtured and supported by myself as well as each other.

I aim to create a space where women feel safe to share their hopes, fears, knowledge and experiences whilst having fun, breathing, stretching and relaxing together. It has been a joy working more closely with some families through their transition to parenthood providing birth and postnatal support as a doula.

Since having my first child at 23 I have always had an interest in supporting others through the journey of pregnancy, childbirth and parenting. As an adult, I studied permaculture and Sustainability and have worked in both Australia and the UK in community engagement roles supporting groups to work towards environmental responsibility and community cohesion. I currently work as a registered childminder.

I have practised yoga in various forms for 10 years and discovered Birthlight during my second pregnancy. I attended the Birthlight pregnancy yoga and active birthing workshops and then the baby yoga classes. I was so inspired by the ethos of Birthlight and the positive effect it had on my whole family through this journey. I have been lucky enough to train under Sally Lomas and am now delighted to be teaching parent and baby yoga classes. In the future I hope to teach toddler yoga and birthing workshops.

I am a yoga teacher and a complementary therapist (naturopath and reflexologist), with a focus on helping women navigate the sometimes bumpy road from conception to motherhood. I teach two small yoga therapy groups for fertility and pregnancy in Cambridge, with a maximum of 10 people so I can offer plenty of individual attention as a yoga teacher and therapist. The gently healing Fertility, Pre-Conception and Early Pregnancy group is for women who want to prepare for conception or who are having some problems conceiving or maintaining their pregnancy, as well as for anyone in the first trimester of pregnancy. The Pregnancy group is open to all women who are at least 14 weeks pregnant, whether they are just looking for a small, intimate and welcoming yoga space or whether they are looking for help with some ailment, discomfort or concern. Both groups focus on gentle and safe yoga- and (Chinese) qigong-based physical exercises, practices to help women reconnect with their instinctive breathing patterns and periods of deep relaxation. I also offer private consultations, where we find the best healing and relaxing mix of naturopathy, reflexology and yoga for each person's particular needs.

This journey began for me more than a decade ago with my own four-year experience of infertility before the birth of my first child. I was living at the time in China, where I turned to Chinese medicine and yoga for support. These helped me so much that, having moved to Italy, I started in 2002 a four-year naturopathy course (based on Chinese medicine) and began delving more deeply into yoga, so that I could share their benefits with other couples trying to start or to maintain a healthy pregnancy. I moved back from Italy to Cambridge in late 2011, bringing with me my training and experience as a naturopath, reflexologist and holistic counsellor, as well as a teacher of MogaDao Yoga (a lovely practice that brings together yoga and the Chinese healing art of Qigong) and of Birthlight yoga for pregnancy and for fertility.

Freedom for Birth Screening - 20 September, Cambridge Arts Picturehouse
Cambridge Film Festival Freedom for Birth premieres at the 32nd Cambridge Film Festival, September 20th 2012

Birthlight is hosting two screenings of Freedom for Birth at the 32nd Cambridge Film Festival, followed by Q&A sessions with the film's Director Toni Harman (11.00am only), Birthlight Founder Dr Françoise Barbira Freedman, Birthlight Trustee Dr Sophie Messager and Maddie McMahon of Developing Doulas.

The film will premiere globally at close to 1000 locations worldwide, including people's homes and at the Royal College of Midwives, all of which will be followed by a conversation and debate about how we can work together to change childbirth.

Freedom for Birth Human rights abuses in childbirth are happening everyday in every country around the world. These routine human rights abuses do not just affect the health and well-being of mothers and their babies, but on a global scale, these violations threaten our survival as a species. The film focuses on the story of two Hungarian women, a midwife Agnes Gereb who has been jailed for supporting women giving birth at home, and a mother, Anna Ternovsky, who won a landmark case against Hungary at the European Court of Human Rights, giving every birthing woman the legal right to decide where and how she gives birth. This film positions childbirth as the most pressing human issue globally and provides the key that will unlock a revolution that will change the world.

Tickets for the screenings are £7.50, which will take place on Thursday September 20th at 11.00am (babies welcome) and 5.45pm, are available via the Cambridge Film Festival website - www.cambridgefilmfestival.org.uk or by phone 0871 902 5720 or on the door.

If you can't make that date, the Mindful Midwifery Society at Anglia Ruskin University is hosting their own screening on Saturday 22nd September, 10am-12.30pm at Victoria House, Capital Park, Fulbourn CB21 5XA, which will be attended by midwifery students and lecturers.
