November Holidays Bring Minor

Change to Waste Collection

While Town of Fuquay-Varina government offices will close November 11 in observance of Veterans Day, solid waste and recycling material will be collected as regularly scheduled during the week of November 7-11, 2011.

Town offices will also close November 24-25 for Thanksgiving. Trash will not be collected on Thanksgiving Day. For citizens that normally have garbage collection service on Thursday, November 24, plan on garbage service on Friday, Nov. 25.

Please remember to place garbage carts curbside after 7:00 p.m. on the evening before your collection day.

Loose Leaf Collection Begins

The Town will begin its annual leaf collection service in mid-November and continue through mid-February 2012. During this time, leaves are vacuumed curbside. Residents may place loose leaves and pine straw that are free of limbs, sticks, rocks and other debris at the curb. Do not place leaves in the street where they may interfere with traffic or drainage. Do not block sidewalks or fire hydrants. For this service only, do not bag leaves since loose leaves are being vacuumed curbside. Please place leaves at the curb by late Sunday evening of the week of your service.

Leaves will be picked up on the same green/gold schedule as your recycle. Leaf collection will start on the green route the week of November 14 and the gold route will begin on November 21. A Recycling/Loose Leaf calendar was sent earlier this year in the utility bills. Also access the complete schedule of service, at www.fuquay-varina.org/worksFor more information, call (919) 753-1027

Keep Holiday FOG Out of the Sewer

Sewage backups and overflows are typically the result of fats, oil and grease being introduced into the collection system. Most grease is the byproduct of cooking and is usually found in such things as:
  • Food scraps and meat fats
  • Lard and cooking oil
  • Butter and margarine
  • Baking goods
  • Sauces
  • Dairy products

Over time, fats, oils and grease build up and eventually block the entire pipe causing sewage backups and overflows. The Town of Fuquay-Varina Public Utilities Department reminds citizens to dispose of fats, oil and grease in the appropriate manner this holiday season.

Here are some tips to keep the sewer clean and FOG free:

All cooking fat, oil and grease should be collected in a container and disposed of in the garbage. Never pour grease down the drain.

Wipe dishes, pots and pans coated with greasy leftovers with a disposable towel prior to washing in the sink or placing in the dishwasher.

Always put cooking grease containers and greasy towels in a plastic bag before disposing of them in your trash bag.

Do not place food scraps into the sewer. Place food scraps in waste containers or garbage bags for disposal.
