RECIPE FOR SUCCESS: VSP Vision Care With a new coordinator on board this year, VSP Vision Care aimed to support one of its company's values of giving back to the community with its Operation Feed campaign. In previous years, VSP has used competition between floors to encourage its employees to participate. This year, they wanted to focus more on the cause, bringing employees together to raise meals for those in need.
VSP's weeklong campaign was filled with various activities. The first day kicked off with a book fair, silent auction, and gift card raffle. Tasty treats enticed employees to donate to the cause with a popcorn and pop sale one day and an ice cream social another day. Throughout the week, employees were also able to enter a raffle to win gas cards. On Friday, employees were able to purchase dress down items to wear to work for $1 each, including sweatshirts, hats and flip-flops.
Leading up to its campaign, all VSP employees received a schedule of events for the week. In the main lobby, a TV displayed the day's events, and daily emails reminded employees how to support Operation Feed each day. Communication with employees included Mid-Ohio Foodbank hunger statistics to reinforce the immediate need present in our community.
Those involved with the VSP campaign have a passion for helping to fight hunger in our community. They are excited to continue to support Operation Feed, and are already brainstorming ideas for next year's campaign. Thank you, VSP, for once again helping Operation Feed in the fight against hunger! |
Reminder: Get Your Campaign Photos Ready! Don't forget to show how you "Rally to Tally" in the fight against hunger by entering your organization in the Operation Feed photo contest. The winners will be announced at the Campaign Finale event and will be used in Operation Feed 2012 marketing materials. Encourage your employees, members and friends to visit our Facebook page and "like" the photos they want to see as finalists! Entries are limited to one photo per organization. Reminder: Share Your Campaign Results
Once your campaign activities have concluded, please take a minute to tell us about your drive. Share your results online using this Final Reporting Form. Remember that the Meals Tracking Log can help you record food or funds raised and that each donation should be accompanied by a Food Drive Contribution Form or Monetary Contribution Form (this helps us ensure that all donations are properly credited back to your organization). Please mail checks and money orders directly to the Operation Feed bank lockbox for processing, rather than bring them to the Foodbank (several local banks offer Cash and Coin Processing Resources to help streamline processing of funds generated by campaign activities). Operation Feed's Campaign Coordinator Resources web page offers additional resources to help finish your drive. See Wrapping Up - 4 Easy Steps or contact a member of the Operation Feed team with any questions. Thank you for your support!

SHELF LIFE: Wings of Hope America Wings of Hope America has been serving lunch to the hungry in South Columbus for the past five years. Previously named The Mustard Seed, this soup kitchen location has been serving meals to the poor and homeless at a small house on Parsons Avenue for about 30 years.
A faith-based organization, Wings of Hope aims to "lift up those in need." Serving 50 to 100 people daily, the soup kitchen feeds anyone who walks through the door, including those struggling with homelessness, unemployment, mental illness, and drug or alcohol addiction.
"I've heard heart-rending stories from those we serve," said Nancy Young, director at Wings of Hope America. "You cannot expect someone to change their situation if they don't have the basic necessities of life, so that's what we attempt to provide for them."
Wings of Hope tends to serve the most meals during the summer months. Also, the numbers tend to decrease during the first week of each month, but quickly climb the following week, continually increasing as the month ends. Soup kitchen volunteers notice new people just about every day, as well as those who eat lunch at Wings of Hope regularly.
Wings of Hope America receives about 70 percent of its food from Mid-Ohio Foodbank. It relies on donations from local churches and individuals for additional sources of funding. Other programs offered at Wings of Hope are bible study, worship services, and bus ministry. The organization - run entirely by volunteers - hopes to expand its services to include more programs for those in need through increased donations.
The soup kitchen serves free lunch Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. It is located at 1547 Parsons Avenue.
