RECIPE FOR SUCCESS: ELEVATE thinking and dynamIt
Shopping-Cart-Bar-Red
ELEVATE thinking, a brand design and marketing agency in Columbus, finds it important to give back to the community, and they chose to participate in Operation Feed for its visible, direct impact on those in need. ELEVATE thinking treated its Operation Feed campaign as one of its clients, brainstorming creative ideas to come up with a plan for action. They approached long-time agency partners and friends at dynamIt, a digital agency who shares their passion for helping the community, to join forces and fight hunger with a friendly competition.

ELEVATE-dynamItAt ELEVATE thinking, the "Big Wall of Thinking" transformed into the "Big Wall of Feeding" during the first week of May. Throughout the week, employees at ELEVATE thinking and dynamIt brought in canned goods and non-perishable food items, which were tallied at the end of each day. Mascots for each team climbed ropes and ladders up the Big Wall of Feeding to track each team's progress. The Sock Monkey (ELEVATE) and Domo (dynamIt) moved one space for each can, and there were special incentives along the way to move bonus spaces once certain milestones were met. They also used Facebook, Twitter and blog posts to promote their initiative and fuel the competition.

In the end, the winner was Mid-Ohio Foodbank! Because they surpassed their internal goals, the two mascots did a couple trips up the Big Wall. Employees at ELEVATE thinking and dynamIt celebrated their successful campaign together at the end of the week, reflecting on how their contributions will directly benefit the hungry in our community.

ELEVATE thinking and dynamIt may be small agencies, but they rallied together to raise over 1,900 meals - more than double their goal! This was the first year of participating in Operation Feed for both organizations, and they are already brainstorming fun ideas for next year's campaign.

Thank you, ELEVATE thinking and dynamIt, for using your creativity to help Operation Feed in the fight against hunger in our community!

SHELF LIFE: People in Need, Inc. (Delaware)

Delaware County is one of the fastest growing counties in the U.S., expanding from a population of 53,840 in 1980 to 168,000 in 2010. People in Need, Inc. began as a small food pantry in the basement of Asbury United Methodist Church in 1980, when the community realized there was not a pantry located in Delaware. People in Need aims to provide emergency assistance with dignity and respect to Delaware County residents in their time of need.

Through its food pantry, People in Need provides emergency food, household items and school supplies, and each individual or family member receives food staples for three days, with three meals each day. In April, People in Need assisted 905 people, providing 8,145 meals. When filling requests for food assistance, People in Need volunteers follow nutritional guidelines from The Ohio State University Extension Office. Clients receive fresh bread, meat and produce with every meal. About 90 percent of the produce it distributes comes from Mid-Ohio Foodbank. People in Need distributed more than 13 tons of produce in 2010.

PeopleInNeed-Photo
People in Need also offers emergency services assistance for rent, utility bills, medical prescriptions and supplies, eyeglasses, and dental treatment. They work with clients to help them find a more permanent solution to improve their current situation. People in Need collaborates with local, regional and national resources to deliver its services. It is a member agency of Mid-Ohio Foodbank, and also receives support from grants, community organizations, churches, civic groups and individuals. People in Need is the largest recipient of United Way assistance in Delaware County.

The rapid population growth in Delaware County continued to increase the need for the services People in Need provides to those in the community. From 1997 to 2010, People in Need experienced a growth rate of 113 percent. 87 percent of people using the services of People in Need are employed or have a stable income, but are unable to make ends meet.

Volunteers are vital to the programs available at People in Need. Volunteers fill orders and maintain inventory in the food pantry, assist with clerical tasks, participate in special projects, such as the "CAN"paign and Holiday Clearing House, and raise awareness of hunger in the community.

Delaware County residents may call People in Need to request food and emergency services assistance. Families are able to receive food assistance once a month. To receive food, an individual needs to show photo identification and proof of residency. The pantry is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4:30 p.m., and Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon and 1-3 p.m. People in Need, Inc. is located at 138 Johnson Drive in Delaware, Ohio.

For more information about People in Need programs and volunteering, contact Kevin Crowley at (740)363-6284, or visit the website at delawarepeopleinneed.org.
