Dear ARThouse friends,

This month really starts the "art season" for all of us working artists, and is always an important month for me.  Many shows are coming up, or already in progress, and I am working hard to finish and frame numerous new paintings!
Especially exciting is my upcoming participation in an invitational show at Les Yeux du Monde gallery in Charlottesville, VA.  The Opening is this coming Saturday, March 31, from 5:30-7:30pm.  I will have my "urban archaeology" paintings in the show, along with several Appalachian landscapes that reflect the beautiful rolling hills of this region.  Your invitation is below!
Also exciting is the upcoming American Watercolor Society show in New York from April 3-22.  As you know, I have now been elected as a member to this prestigious society!  More below...
As always, feel free to stop by!  We are open Wed-Sun from 10-6pm.

Les Yeux du Monde evening photo
Les Yeux du Monde Gallery, in Charlottesville, VA
Les Yeux du Monde, meaning "Eyes of the World" sits atop a small mountain outside of Charlottesville, Virginia, surrounded by incredible views of the mountains.  It has become an exciting destination for art lovers from around the area and has received much publicity.  The gallery, under the direction of art historian and Picasso expert Lyn Bolen Warren, features rotating shows of important regional and nationally-known artists.
Our show, titled "New Vistas" will feature the oil paintings of Isabelle Abbott, Karen Blair, Janet Bruce, original prints by Kris Iden, and watercolors by yours truly, Susan Murphy.  All five of us will be in attendance at the Opening Reception on Saturday, March 31, from 5:00-7:30pm.
You are hereby invited!  The gallery is located at 841 Wolf Trap Road, Charlottesville, VA  22911.  Normal gallery hours are Thursday--Sunday, 1-5pm, or by appointment.  Phone is 434-973-5566.  Don't be intimidated by the long, winding ride up the hill--when you get the the top the view is spectacular!!
So take a beautiful spring day and drive the backroads to Charlottesville to enjoy this gallery and this show!     --Sue
AWS show--Salmagundi Club
The American Watercolor Society Show opens on April 2 with an elegant reception at the venerable old Salmagundi Club , 47 5th Avenue, and continues through Sunday April 22.  Hours are 1-6pm daily, except the weekends when it closes at 5pm.  This is an incredible show and has been an inspiration for watercolor artists the world over for the last 145 years.  The AWS really sets the bar for excellence in the highly competitive watercolor field.  Marco and I will be going to the Opening Reception and to the Annual Dinner.
AWS--galleries of Salmagundi Club
The Salmagundi Club, founded in 1871, is one of the oldest art organizations in the United States. Housed in an historic brownstone mansion in Greenwich Village, New York City, the Club offers programs including art classes, exhibitions, painting demonstrations, and art auctions throughout the year for members and the general public.

The Club owns a collection of over 1,500 works of art spanning its 140 year history and has a membership of nearly 850 artists and patrons. Its members have included important American artists such as Thomas Moran, William Merritt Chase, Louis Comfort Tiffany, N.C. Wyeth and Childe Hassam. It is an important venue for art exhibitions in New York City, and is the annual location of the American Watercolor Society exhibit.

ARThouse is a unique studio and gallery located in Sandy Spring, Maryland, about 10 miles north of Washington, DC.   It is the original studio of watercolorist Susan Avis Murphy, and has been expanded to also showcase and sell the work of other excellent artists from the Washington metropolitan area.  Also adult classes in watercolor and drawing are taught at ARThouse.
