What's happening in Still Life in Watercolor?

I am teaching a six-session class for adult watercolorists on painting still life in watercolor.
You can follow the class on my blog to learn about this difficult skill!
Just go to:

Last week, I did a painting for the class of a still life I had photographed at a quaint little cafe in Venice, Florida, called the Blu Island Bistro.  Here is the photo I used as a reference, followed by the steps I took in painting the watercolor.  You will find a blow-by-blow description of the painting process on my blog next week.

Dear ARThouse friends,

I hope you have been having a nice winter--bizarre how mild it has been!  I usually count on the winter months to get a lot of painting done, because I'm not tempted by gardening and yard work, but it looks like we are going to have to get out there soon!
I would like to share with you some news about an exciting show I have been invited to participate in below, and also show you a description of a new painting I have done, on the side bar to the left.
My teaching this winter has been a course about Still Life Painting in Watercolor, and in May we will be showcasing the wonderful paintings that are being done by the students in this course.  You will be getting an invitation soon!
As always, feel free to stop by!  We are open Wed-Sun from 10-6pm.

The upcoming show at Les Yeux du Monde: "New Vistas"

Les Yeux du Monde Gallery, in Charlottesville, VA
I am extremely pleased to announce that I have been invited to participate in a five-artist show at Les Yeux du Monde, an incredible gallery that sits atop a small mountain near Charlottesville, Virginia!
Les Yeux du Monde, meaning "Eyes of the World" is the brainchild of University of Virgina art historian Dr. Lyn Bolen Warren, and her artist husband, the well-known neo-expressionist painter Russ Warren.   Designed by the architecture firm W. G. Clark and Associates, the gallery is elegant in its simplicity and edgy in its design.  LYCM opened in 2009 to critical acclaim, with a stable of artists working in contemporary styles across the area.
The show, titled "New Vistas" will feature the oil paintings of Isabelle Abbott, Karen Blair, Janet Bruce, original prints by Kris Iden, and watercolors from my Urban Archeology series by yours truly, Susan Murphy.  All five of us will be in attendance at the Opening Reception on Saturday, March 31, from 5:00-7:30pm.
You are hereby invited!  The gallery is located at 841 Wolf Trap Road, Charlottesville, VA  22911.  Normal gallery hours are Thursday--Sunday, 1-5pm, or by appointment.  Phone is 434-973-5566.  Don't be intimidated by the long, winding ride up the hill--when you get the the top the view is spectacular!!
So, "hold the date", as they say, and I will tell you more about this show in the March Newsletter.    --Sue

I would like to thank all the gracious people who extended their congratulations to me for my recent acceptance as a signature member of the American Watercolor Society!  Marco and I are very much looking forward to going up to New York for the Opening on April 3, and again for the Annual Dinner on April 20, where I will be officially announced as a new member.
This is always one of the most amazing watercolor shows of the year, and if you are fond of watercolor, you might like to take the trip to New York to see the show.  It runs from April 3-22 at the Salmagundi Club, 47 5th Avenue.
ARThouse is a unique studio and gallery located in Sandy Spring, Maryland, about 10 miles north of Washington, DC.   It is the original studio of watercolorist Susan Avis Murphy, and has been expanded to also showcase and sell the work of other excellent artists from the Washington metropolitan area.  Also adult classes in watercolor and drawing are taught at ARThouse.
ARThouse is open to the public almost daily and is the venue for special art shows several times per year.  Join our mailing list by emailing us at susan@susanavismurphy.com and you will receive invitations to the shows and special announcements.
