If you are interested in portraits, I have a show for you to see!

         "Expressions"
is the name of an amazing portrait show being held right how, though Nov. 22, at Art Space Herndon.  Jurors selected 25 paintings as finalists for display, and my painting, "Contemporary Couple", was selected.  It is the only watercolor in a show of almost exclusively oils! (strange that...).
Art Space Herndon is located at 750 Center Street, Herndon, VA, telephone 703-956-6590.  You can read about the show on their website at:
This truly is an excellent show and worth the trip to Virginia.

Dear ARThouse friends,

This is the month of Pumpkin Pie here at ARThouse, and at your house too, I'm sure!   And it is the month for our watercolor show, "Recent Paintings by Susan Avis Murphy".  We are now busy re-decorating the gallery, putting up all the newest paintings, and adding the finishing touches like title cards and the like.  The opening will be on Sunday, November 13, from 12:00 - 5:00 pm, and the show continues through January 7.
There will be nice refreshments, including ARThouse punch and pumpkin pie, so please come and have a piece!   We will be open during Thanksgiving weekend, including Friday, if you would like to stop by with your friends or relatives.   Your invitation is below--

I am going to have a solo show this time, of all my recent work done in the last year or two.  The show will feature new watercolors from my series "Urban Archeology", plus my new figurative paintings of statues (and real people!).  Also, all the new things I have been painting recently, including abstracts and still life.  Giclee prints of many of these new paintings will be available at a lower cost, and can be framed anyway you desire.

"The Latte Effect" won an award at the 83rd Grand National Exhibition of the American Artists Professional League at the Salmagundi Club in New York.  This show
features paintings done in a realist style that are drawn from all over the country.  The goals of the society are "To advance the cause of the fine arts in America, through the promotion of high standards of beauty, integrity and craftsmanship in painting, scupture and the graphic arts".  We went up to see the show this past Monday, and it really was an astounding collection of finely executed paintings.

Salmagundi Club
This is near the front entrance of the venerable old Salmagundi Club, at 47 Fifth Avenue in New York.  The Salmagundi Club is one of New York's premier venues for art shows, and is the site of the annual American Watercolor Society show each year.  It is the only remaining brownstone building on Fifth Avenue.

This was a very worthwhile workshop.  I had never really worked with gouache before, and found that I liked it very much!  If you are interested in attending a workshop sponsored by the Baltimore Watercolor Society, visit our website at
