Dear ARThouse friends,

   This is
Susan Murphy photo ofthe Month of Finishing here at ARThouse!  I am preparing for a studio show in November, and I've got to finish all those unfinished paintings!  Also, I've got to finish framing things in time for the show!  And, OK, you could say that summer is finished too, and a new season is upon us...  Our trees are looking beautiful, but we will have a lot leaves to rake soon!

Save the date!  The show is going to feature only my own work, with lots of new paintings and giclee prints.  Our special opening will be on Sunday, November 13, from 12-5pm.  The show will hang through January 7.  If we have your street address, you will get a postcard invitation.   We will have lots of nice refreshments, plus wine and punch.  Your invitation is below.  Hope you can come!

I am going to have a solo show this time, of all my recent work done in the last year or two.  The show will feature new watercolors from my series "Urban Archeology", plus my new figurative paintings of statues (and real people!).  Also, all the new things I have been painting recently, including abstracts and still life.  Giclee prints of many of these new paintings will be available at a lower cost, and can be framed anyway you desire.

I took a fabulous workshop with Carla O'Connor
In my role as workshop co-chairman for the Baltimore Watercolor Society, I was in charge of organizing a 5-day figure painting workshop in September with Carla O'Connor, from Washington state.

We had a beautiful model come and pose for us each morning, while the 25 artists furiously scratched away on their sketch pads in order to develop drawings for future paintings.  Carla led us through challenging exercises to get us to think "outside the box" and loosen up.

The last two days were spent doing full paintings using watercolor and gouache, which is basically watercolor with finely ground chalk added to make it opaque.  The artists, who came from seven states, did some amazing paintings.  Below is the painting I did, showing a little scene from my son's wedding in May, with his new Japanese relatives dressed in kimonos.  OK, OK, that is me off to the right, with the crazy black hat and red rose...

And here is a painting I did at home, using the same techniques:

This was a very worthwhile workshop.  I had never really worked with gouache before, and found that I liked it very much!  If you are interested in attending a workshop sponsored by the Baltimore Watercolor Society, visit our website at
