Career Tracker: You!  Building a career in Art!

Are you a part-time artist who wants to learn more about building a career?  Would you like to learn how to do your own picture framing too?

This Saturday, June 11, the Baltimore Watercolor Society will be presenting a one-day workshop on The Business of Art.  The morning session will be taught by professional graphic designer, Kathryn Grill Hoeppel, who will discuss turning your art hobby into a business.

The afternoon session will be taught by yours truly, Susan Murphy, and will concern Picture Framing for the Artist.  I will be discussing the aesthethics of matting and framing, and strategies for the artist to reduce the cost of framing.  I will then do some demonstrations of matting and framing.

There is still room in this special seminar.  Cost is only $30 for the entire day.  The workshop will take place at the Howard County Center for the Arts in Ellicott City.  Contact Diane Gibson, BWS program chairman if you would like to sign up.  Her email is: [email protected]

This is the Month of the Garden here at ARThouse!  The weather has been beautiful and our garden always looks best in June.  By then things are really growing and blooming, and at that time it is most fun to work in the garden before the hot weather hits!

New paintings are also taking shape.  I am working on a double portrait of my son Paul with his new bride, Yoshino.  They were married in May in a beautiful wedding, and will be leaving soon for Chad, where Paul will be serving as a Foreign Service Officer.  So I would like to get their portrait done before they leave.  We certainly will miss them...

Meanwhile, I have painted numerous smaller watercolors this past spring, including some ocean scenes and some abstracts! See some samples on the sidebar or stop by at ARThouse to take a closer look!  We are usually open Wed-Fri, from 10-6pm.

The Adirondack Exhibition of American Watercolors

 in Old Forge, New York

I've had the good fortune of having a painting accepted into this important show again this year, shown above.  The exhibition takes place from August 20 - October 2, in the beautiful new Arts Center in Old Forge, New York, located in the southwest section of the Adirondack Park.  Many notable watercolorists exhibit in this show, and it is worth seeing if you are up in that area later this summer.

Okay, okay, you may be wondering, "Why does she paint construction rubble?"...
Well, here is what I said in my Artist's Statement for the show:

The bricks and cinderblocks in my paintings, strewn over the ground, present to me beautiful abstract patterns filled with interesting texture and light...They can also be used as a vehicle for social commentary, with little bits of trash or other focal points added to the rubble...The "latte effect" is a term I came across in a book on personal finance.  It refers to the amount of money you can find over the long term by not buying that $5 coffee every day!  --Susan Murphy, 6/3/11
