SAILING CAMP FOR
GROWN UPS is coming! Plan on joining the ASA for Members' Week on the Summer Sailstice June 15th thru June 22nd, 2012 in
at the beautiful Renaissance Vinoy Resort in St. Petersburg, Florida.
It's time for summer sailing, seminars and fun, at the ASA Members' Week! What is Members' Week? It is best described as sailing camp for grown ups. Once a year the ASA selects a beautiful land based resort so that family members, sailors and non-sailors alike can experience a taste of sailing as much as or as little as they like. Whether you prefer to sail, visit the spa, or just lay by the pool, you'll have plenty of like-minded people around.. You are just about certain to make new lasting friendships by meeting others that share your passion. For the sailors we have planned a week of sailing. Try out different keelboats boats from Catalina, Hunter and Beneteau as well as small boat sailing opportunities on a Compac, Topaz or Happy Cat. Practice your skills at docking, man overboard or learn to fly a spinnaker. Daily seminars provide an opportunity to introduce your family to the fun of sailing and the lifestyle. The laid back atmosphere encourages those who have never before been aboard a boat to give it a try. ASA certified instructors captain the various boats and give informal training designed to whet your appetite for more. Making new friends may be just the ticket to give you some one else to share that first charter with on your next vacation. The Renaissance Vinoy Resort Hotel has been the pride of St. Petersburg for 80 years, a monument to grace, elegance an internationally sought after destination located right on the waterfront. This grand historical landmark was first opened on December 31, 1925 and has attracted many a sophisticated clientele. You may even notice discrete signage that requests you not take photos or disturb any celebrates staying at the resort. Located along the waterfront and within walking distance to museums, shopping, dining and entertainment there is no need for a car. If you don't feel like walking you can hop the local trolley called the looper and ride out to the end of the Pier for a beautiful view of Tampa Bay. Tour the local galleries like Chihuly or Salvador Dali. Just come and enjoy all the area has to offer. Come one and all! Sign up for AMERICAN SAILING WEEK 2012 early and save!

Featured Sailing Destination
Hudson River, New York City
By ASA Instructor, David Polakoff
"You live in New York, so where do you sail?" My landlubber, New York friends are a bit myopic when it comes to the fact that we live on an island, 13 miles in length, with water on all sides, which is a robust home to all forms of sailing activity. Believe me, the Hudson River/New York Bay is a playground for sailors, and that's no secret to the New York/New Jersey sailing community, or to anyone with a home or office view of the Hudson River. Applying some license to the lyrics from the "Theme from New York, New York," if you can sail here, you can sail anywhere.
I've been sailing on the Hudson River for 20 years and of the multitude of pleasurable reasons I can give you to sail here, the most compelling is the view. Perhaps you've seen the aerial shots, from documentaries, the news, or films of New York, but to own the view, from the water, from a sailboat is totally unique. It can occupy hours to days, especially as the same sites must be viewed during daylight, dusk, and at night. The light show, as the sun descends and the lights of the city come up, is as dramatic as the curtain opening on a Broadway show.

Boat Drinks
By Stacey Brooks Connelly
ASA Instructor and School Owner
Just saying "boat drinks" conjures up all kinds of far-away dreamy feelings like your toes in the sand, a drink in your hand...you know the song.
When the sails come down and you are motoring into your favorite anchorage for the evening, it's time to start thinking about what cold, frosty beverage might await you once the hook is set. Whether you are near home or in a far away land, all of these tasty adult beverages are quick, easy and delicious. All the ingredients are pretty easy to locate, so whip up a batch, sit back and enjoy the sunset.
