Sailing With Style American Sailing E-News
October 2011
|
Greetings!
Fall is truly upon us, and it's hard to believe that the summer sailing season is over. Of course, that means more time to plan your sailing adventures for next year, or perhaps a mid-winter getaway to warmer climes! To help you out, we have a profile of South Florida's Biscayne Bay by some local experts, and a variety of other great tidbits in this edition of Sailing with Style. And don't forget to plan your pirate costume for Halloween. Please enjoy, and email us with your suggestions so that we can continue to improve it. We hope to see you at one of ASA's flotillas, member events, or regional boatshows soon!
Sincerely,
 Charlie Nobles Executive Director |

An Easygoing Exploration of Biscayne Bay
By ASA/USCG Captains Margie and Harold Ochstein
On the southeast edge of Florida at the foot of the modern, vibrant city of Miami lies Biscayne Bay. Sailing down the bay is your entryway into Biscayne National Park and the Florida Keys, a 170-mile chain of islands stretching off to the south and southwest of mainland Florida. The calm, pristine waters of the bay are protected from the ocean by the coral reefs and the island chain beginning with Key Biscayne. These are a few of our favorite spots; but wherever you go, the water is clear, the wildlife is abundant and the pace is relaxed.
Key Biscayne
Your journey into Biscayne Bay begins once you pass under the MacArthur Causeway. The waterfront highrises of Miami are close by on your right and Key Biscayne with its marinas and anchorages appears on your left. You can anchor off the west side of Key Biscayne for a comfortable night in the prevailing easterlies. At the south end of Key Biscayne you will find No Name Harbor located in Bill Baggs State Park.

Digestive Biscuits: Not Just for Tea Time
By Chef Mark Ramsdell, ASA Member
Borrowing from the Royals This past spring, most of the world had its eyes focused on the Royal Wedding of Prince William, an accomplished sailor, and Katherine. An absolutely beautiful event. Many pastry chefs, however, including me, were also focused on the cakes - the beautiful, classically designed (bride's) wedding cake, and the luscious square, tiered, chocolate groom's cake. The groom's cake, a favorite of William and his father Prince Charles, turned out to be a version of the very popular and delicious McVitie's biscuit cake. Why a Biscuit Cake? When my wife Sue and I sail in the BVI with Andy and Lisa Batchelor of Sail Solomons, we always have tea and biscuits in the afternoon. Andy is from Dorset, England; he loves digestive biscuits, and served for 33 years in the RAF (as does Prince William). So when we celebrated Andy's birthday at a recent club BBQ, we thought it appropriate that his cake be a version of the famous groom's cake. Read More |
