Congratulations to Peter Isler and the Crew of Rambler! |
|
On Sunday, July 10th, sailing yacht Rambler and its crew, which included ASA co-founder Peter Isler, reached the end of the 2011 Transatlantic Race. Not only did Rambler finish in first place, it established a new record for the 2.975 nautical mile course that stretches from Newport, Rhode Island to the Lizard, south of Cornwall, England. The yacht completed the journey in 6 days, 22 hours, 8 minutes, and 2 seconds, making an average speed of 15.7 knots, and sometimes reaching as high as 28 knots.
ASA would like to congratulate Peter Isler and the entire crew of Rambler on
this fantastic accomplishment.
Peter Isler is one of ASA's founders and a member of our Board of Directors. In addition, he is a famed America's Cup sailor, winning the Cup twice, first as navigator aboard Stars & Stripes in 1987, and later as a member of Stars & Stripes' afterguard. Overall, Peter has made five America's Cup campaigns and won countless other major sailing competitions. Add the Transatlantic Race and a new
record to the list!

Bareboat Chartering Essentials Chartering Notes: Top Ten Ways to Spend Extra Boat Bucks
by Captain Andy Batchelor
ASA Instructor Evaluator and School Owner
So here you are, feeling very pleased with yourself at having your boat finally ready to go cruising. You have planned this for years; maybe even all your life. You've selected the right boat, you've visited all the boats shows, and researched all the latest gear. You have read every cruising magazine and book on the market, you have logged onto all the cruising forums and spoken with as many cruising sailors as you possibly can.
Armed with all that research, you've made extensive lists and spreadsheets to ensure that your beautiful cruiser has everything taken care of, and is in the best possible shape to take you cruising. You sweated pints scraping and sanding the bottom in August, when sensible folks are having fun on the water. You spent most of September with your head in the remotest of cavities - the bilge, the engine compartment, the generator, and of course, the head! Always a fun thing to do in hot, sticky Chesapeake weather... While all this was going on, you had your sails checked over and re-stitched again and again, or perhaps you finally had to bite the bullet and buy replacements. The rigging has been checked, you've bought new jib sheets (you know yours will only last half the winter). Your EPIRB and life-raft have been serviced; why is that so expensive? Granted, they did give you back the old emergency water packets! Maybe you also had to replace or upgrade your flares, lifejackets and First Aid kit. If this is your first time blue-water cruising you may have had to buy jacklines, tethers, perhaps an SSB and spare VHF.

The Nautical Chef
Salt Cod to the Hors d'oeuvre Rescue
by Chef and ASA Member Mark Ramsdell
Salt cod was always a major part of provisioning on early sailing vessels. The cod fillets, preserved with salt, were as important to my family as they were to our ancestors on those ships, as they did not need refrigeration. My family, like most households of the 1950's, had an icebox but didn't always have ice. So we relied a lot on salted, dried, and canned goods when we couldn't get fresh ingredients.
We ate a lot of salt cod while I was growing up in New England: croquettes, cream salt cod on Friday nights (common for New England Catholic families), and brandade for lunch or a first course. In fact, some of my first toys were little wooden boxes with sliding lids, the most common packaging for salt cod.
