Bareboat Chartering Essentials Chartering with Kids
by Captain Lisa Batchelor Frailey
ASA Instructor and School Owner
Families and boating go together like peanut butter and jelly. My family boating experience started when I was 2 months old; Dad had converted a Navy-surplus 36' wooden landing craft into our family cruising boat. As a kid, I spent virtually every summer weekend and vacation boating, and I am ever grateful for the experience. Shared family time, learning new skills, seeing new ports, swimming off the boat, fishing and "sleeping out" can bring a family together like nothing else. As a cruiser and charter operator, I've had the pleasure of seeing families literally grow up sailing together - whether on their own boats, or on charter vacations. In this article, I draw from the tips offered by seasoned sailing parents to make chartering with kids a memorable and enjoyable vacation.

The Mighty Wok - Wok up your Sailing Galley
by Chef and ASA Member Mark Ramsdell
Introduction
For sailors trying to simplify their galley, a wok may well be the answer.
The Wok, the age-old Asian cooking pan, is inexpensive and easy to use. It's also safe, efficient, and multipurpose. And it's the only cooking device which is naturally gimbaled. When asked to name their favorite, perhaps essential, cooking utensil, many cruisers point to their wok. But it's also useful for the weekend sailor who wants to cook a meal on board. The wok shape is so popular that several pan suppliers - Mauviel, All-Clad, Cuisinart, and Calphalon to name a few -- have even developed a Chef's wok pan in copper and stainless steel.
