Sailing With Style American Sailing E-News
May 2011
|
Greetings!
May is full of good excuses to go sailing! The weather is getting nice, and maybe you can treat Mom to a day on the water (Mother's Day is May 8th!). And, of course, Memorial Day weekend is always a great time to get away and do something special, like spend a few peaceful days improving your sailing skills with friends and family. Whatever you're doing this month, we hope you enjoy the articles in this newsletter and sail with style. Please enjoy, and email us with your suggestions so that we can continue to improve it. We hope to see you at one of ASA's flotillas, member events, or regional boatshows soon!
Sincerely,
 Charlie Nobles Executive Director |
Bareboat Chartering Essentials Bareboat Charter Etiquette
by Captain Lisa Batchelor Frailey
ASA Instructor and School Owner
Living aboard a bareboat charter can be a magical experience; waking to a spectacular sunrise and the aroma of fresh-brewed coffee, leisurely swims and bathing off the stern, and sailing to new and exotic ports each day. You are surrounded with the comforts of "home" - even if your charter boat is only home for a week. Unless you are bareboating with immediate family or roommates, you probably don't know your crew's living habits, which are likely to be very different from your own. Some or all the crew may be unfamiliar with the nuances of onboard life, and the ramifications of normal landlubber actions.

Fruitcake for Teatime
by Lou Haskett, ASA Member
A long time ago, before refrigeration, fruits were unavailable year round. Old sailing ships were at sea for long periods, and there was a need for foods that could be stored. When fruits are dehydrated, they are preserved and can be used in recipes or even reconstituted.
When I heard afternoon tea was going to be an every day event on our 8 day sail through the British Virgin Islands, I jumped right in and made a fruitcake as my contribution. Afternoon tea is about half way between lunch and dinner, and is sometimes just a snack, and other times also known as "cocktails!" (See American Sailing E-News, November 2010, "Sundowners On Board.")
