SEPTEMBER HUMOR
McAvoy Lane
Ghost of Twain

I could see that I was going to need some transportation while in Carson City, so I attended an auction and bought a genuine Mexican plug. I didn't know what a genuine Mexican plug was, but I bought it on the advice of a man I later found out was the auctioneer's brother.   I immediately named the brute, "Baalbec," on account of the fact that he was such a noble ruin. His tail had been chopped off or else he had sat down on it too hard, some time or tother, and he was proud of it, and so too, he was left to fight off the flies with his heels. Well, with the help of some who held his head, and others who held his tail, I was able to climb onto that steed, but my feet slipped through the stirrups...on the inside, so I was handcuffed at the ankles, and he knew it. He put his feet together...all of them...in a bunch ; lowered his back and fired me five feet into the air.
And somebody shouted, "Whoa, don't he buck!"

ISSUE NO. 6                                                                SEPTEMBER 27, 2011

Hi from Jackpot Equine & Equi Partners. It is our pleasure to feature in this Issue, our friends & Equi Partner Professionals, Shadd & McKenzie Parkinson.

Shadd, McKenzie & Gracie

Introducing
    PARKINSON PERFORMANCE HORSES

Meet Shadd & McKenzie of Parkinson Performance Horses and Team AD International based in Arizona. They offer some great tips for your reining skills...Their efforts are truly a family affair!

The Three Keys to Teaching the Turnaround

1) Feet Follow Nose

This is the first and most important factor in a great turnaround. A horse must learn to follow its nose with its feet. Teach this by walking in a circle, making your circle smaller as you go, and eventually getting the outside foot to step across with pressure from the inside/direct rein.   Work on this repeatedly until your horse steps across in a fluid tempo.

2) Introduce the Outside Rein

The next step is to add pressure from the outside rein to make the shoulders follow the nose as well. Feet follow nose, shoulders follow the feet. Use the outside rein to insure the ribcage follows the shoulders. As your horse becomes more advanced, their body should become straighter, with their nose less pointed into the turn.

3)Turn Off of the Outside Rein

Trot around in a circle to start. Bring both hands across the neck while maintaining a forward motion, and transition into the turnaround.   Turn once or twice and trot out of the turnaround, pushing the body to the nose, not the nose to the body. This will teach your horse to stay collected and turn from its back end. In a great turnaround, the direction should come from the nose, propulsion should come from the back end, and everything in between should fluidly keep up.

These tips and more can be found in Shadd and Al Dunning's new DVD series, Beginning to Winning. Each DVD in this series focuses on one of the four maneuvers that make up today's reining pattern and details how to take your riding and training to the next level.

Al and Shadd clarify each maneuver by breaking it down, spotlighting the keys to proper execution while identifying potential problems that may arise and how to correct them. They show you, step-by-step, how to get the desired result: a correctly executed, winning maneuver.
