A Letter From the Chairman
30th Anniversary Celebration
 | |
Chuck Yash |
This year the Foundation has the opportunity to celebrate a milestone anniversary--30 years of promoting effective philanthropy. In recognition of this anniversary, the Board of Directors, in June announced a matching grants program. 30 for 30 identified 30 organizations in the San Diego County region with whom we have worked, in five different focus areas: Arts & Culture, Animals & Environment, Education, Health & Human Services and local Rancho Santa Fe organizations.
Each of these 30 organizations received $1,000 from us and was challenged to raise an additional $29,000+ before our community celebration on October 20th. In support of their fundraising efforts, we reached out to donor advised fund holders to support these organizations, and we have worked with each organization to assist with their fundraising efforts.
One local donor saw the article in The Review and has selected five organizations to support in recognition of the 30th anniversary. Other donors have combined their next three years of charitable gifts to five organizations in this one year to recognize the work of the Foundation. One organization is working with their many volunteer groups to raise funds through bake sales and special events. All are wonderful examples of people who want to recognize the Foundation for its philanthropic work over the last 30 years. We hope that you will join with us and others in support of the work of these regional nonprofits--if each of these organizations reaches the $30,000 goal, it will represent $900,000 of new philanthropy in San Diego. And please join us on October 20th for our 30th Anniversary Community Celebration.

Paying It Forward

Change yourself. Change your world. Volunteer.
Volunteer San Diego annually connects 62,000 individuals, their families, corporate and community groups with volunteer opportunities at more than 500 diverse service organizations and schools throughout the county. Volunteers of all ages work hand in hand with nonprofit organizations to develop strong and vibrant communities. Volunteer San Diego volunteers teach children the joy of reading, protect our environment, prepare meals and distribute food to our neighbors, and care for abandoned animals.
The recent power outage taught many of us that we weren't as prepared for an emergency as we had thought we were. Did you have the gas and the cash, the medicines and the pet food, the flashlights and the batteries, the drinking water and the dry food you needed? Which of your phones worked? Where had you stored important contacts? We can draw valuable lessons from that experience...don't wait. Get ready now.
Each week through October, Volunteer San Diego will run tips on their Facebook page on volunteering in a disaster--what to do, what not to do in support of responding agencies. Heroes start at home. Be one. Prepare family, friends and co-workers now for a major disaster striking San Diego County.
