Disability Awareness Month

"Our Community is Better Together" is the theme for Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month 2012.

Crossroads of Western Iowa, and other related organizations, celebrated Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month in March, and would invite you to consider the true meaning of this year's theme, "Our Community is Better Together."

Statewide, and across the nation, organizations devoted to serving individuals with developmental disabilities are trying to raise public awareness of the many abilities people have, regardless of a disability. People with developmental disabilities can be friends, neighbors, co-workers, volunteers, teammates, or classmates. Get to know someone with a disability.  You'll see that everyone has something to offer.

What you can do to advocate for individuals with special needs:

  • Get active to spread the word about Developmental Disabilities Awareness
  • Make a donation to CWI
  • Stay informed with our newsletter
  • Stop and visit one of our three locations - Missouri Valley, Onawa, Council Bluffs
  • Contact local, state, and federal legislators
  • Get involved to protect Medicaid services for people with special needs

Consumers and staff are excited to start working on their new flower bed!  Here, George and Howard are starting to prepare the dirt for planting.  We're excited about getting various perennials and annuals to get the flower bed area blooming.  All consumers will be responsible for keeping the flowers maintained and weeds pulled so it always looks presentable.

Easter comes early to CWI...
CWI recently started contracting packaging work with OTC, Oriental Trading Company, out of Omaha, NE.  One of the first projects that were completed was stuffing, sealing, sorting, and packaging 125,000 Easter Eggs!  This project provided work for 25 consumers for about one month.  CWI continues to process and package order for OTC, Matjors Plastics, G&G Manufacturing, CTI and Lynn Roberts International.

Rotella

Missouri Valley LINKS consumers enjoyed a tour of the Rotella Bread Factory in Omaha. Consumers donned hairnets, and in some cases beard-nets, and they got to see how bread is made.  At the end of the tour consumers enjoyed a gift - a loaf of bread and a bag of bread sticks - Yum!
