Consumer Coalition 2012
On February 3 in Missouri Valley, the consumers voted new officers for the Consumer Coalition.  The week before the election everyone nominated 3 or 4 people for each category following the Team Meeting.  Before voting each nominated consumer was given an opportunity to speak to their peers about what they would bring to the coalition if they were voted for.  At separate voting areas staff assisted each consumer in voting one by one for whomever they wanted for each category.  After all the votes were counted the results were as follows:
 Andy Murray                George Fritts
Andrew Murray - President        George Fritts - Vice President
Kristina Detton                Cheryl Butler
Kristina Detton - Secretary          Cheryl Butler - Advocate

The purpose of the Consumer Coalition is an opportunity for elected consumers to represent ideas, strengths, needs and barriers of all consumers to CWI through monthly team meetings.

National Recycling Day
In November, CWI Missouri Valley, participated in National Recycling Day event sponsored by Keep America Beautiful. Clint, Recycling Coordinator, hung up posters, gave out pencils and gave a little speech about recycling to the consumers and staff.  By doing so, CWI was selected one of ten participants NATIONWIDE and we received a $200 American Express pre-paid credit card.  The money will be used for a celebration for our consumers and staff working in the recycling program.

Programs and Services

LINKS Caramel applesProgram Onawa
Have you ever seen so many candied apples?  Two van loads of consumers and staff went to Sioux City to help the Siouxland Humane Society make 12,000 candied apples.  Each apple was dipped in caramel and chocolate then drizzled with white chocolate and crushed toffee candy.  MMMMM...GOOD!  Pictured is George Croson and Patrick Lage getting ready to dip caramel apples in chocolate.

Walking, walking, walking
In Missouri Valley, staff and consumers have been working very hard on getting fit and staying healthy.  A total of 32 consumers and staff have joined the walking program that the Residential program started.  The consumers meet every Tuesday and Thursday after work and walk for a half hour at a time.  The group has milestones to meet which are:  30 miles, 60 miles, 90 miles and 120 miles.  Whenever a consumer or staff meet their milestone they will receive a t-shirt to celebrate that milestone.  All together, so far, the group has walked two hundred sixty nine miles since beginning January 24 and lost a total of 88 lbs.  This has been a great team builder for staff and consumers encouraging each other to reach their goals!

Valentine's Day Party
On the afternoon of February 14 the consumers at the Missouri Valley location had a Valentin'e Day party!  The consumers cast secret ballots voting for King and Queen of the party.  King Chris Thacker and Queen Meg Horan were crowned.  The consumers, who chose to, had their pictures taken in front of the heart filled back drop created by the LINKS program.  All who attended enjoyed a tasty treat of angel food cake with strawberries and whipped topping provided by the LINKS program.  The consumers then danced the afternoon away with music provided by the Vocational program.

Integration Funds at Work

February 17th started out a little chilly and then moved into full sun.  On this perfect day, twenty-seven people in service and seven LINKS coaches boarded buses and vans for a once in a lifetime adventure.  Destination...Mt. Crescent Ski Hills.

Onawa and Council Bluffs mobile "LINKS" programs teamed together for a fun filled day in the snow.  After climbing the hill many times to arrive at the bottom laughing, a lunch was provided in the ski lodge offering an opportunity for community and socialization.

A thank you goes out to all of the supporters of the "community integration fund".  Without you , the funding for some of those served would not have been available. With you...all persons enjoyed a snowy sun filled day on the slopes of Mt. Crescent Ski Hills.
