| Hot Tip |
Low Back Pain? Bend your knees in forward bends. Lightly engage your quadricep muscles. A gentle engagement of the thighs helps loosen the hamstrings.
In Backward Bends, lift your torso up away from your hips and scoop your tailbone under. Be mindful not to go too deep. |

Greetings!
Have you noticed that Hot Yoga makes you better at everything? Check out HYA instructor Laura Czarzasty putting her yoga skills in action while in the air! Read Laura's story and watch her amazing Trapeze video [Click to read, watch...].
We are pleased to announce a very special event in June. Join the teachers of HYA and balance your practice and activities with Yin Yoga.
Need some extra motivation to stay active in July? Sign up for our special July 2011 Challenge.
Our posture of the month is Chaturanga Dandasana. Chaturanga is like a push-up, which makes it a great arm strengthener. Keeping the integrity of the pose from start to end is important to receive the many benefits Chaturanga has to offer and to avoid injury.
Honor your studio, your teacher, and your fellow students by practicing good Yoga Etiquette. Please take the time to read how you can help make Yoga safe and enjoyable for all students.
Please be aware we are incorporating one schedule change beginning in July. In an effort to serve you better, the Saturday afternoon class at 4 pm is moving to 12 pm and will be a 1-hour Hot Yoga class.
Enjoy! |

Practice with Your Teacher's Special Event - You're Invited!

Join the teachers of HYA as they balance their practice with Yin Yoga.
Yin Yoga targets the connective tissues, such as the ligaments, bones, and the joints of the body that normally are not exercised very much in a more active style of yoga like our Hot Yoga classes or activities like running, cycling, hiking, weight lifting, golf, tennis, etc.
Yin Yoga is a perfect complement to the dynamic and muscular style of our Hot Yoga classes which emphasize the lengthening and strengthening of our muscles. Yin Yoga targets the connective tissues found in abundance in the hips, pelvis, and lower spine.
While this form of exercise is done without accessing the strength of the muscular tissue, Yin Yoga can be quite challenging due to the longer durations of the poses. We will hold each pose from 3 to 5 minutes on each side. We will practice in a warm room without the added humidity. All of the postures will be done on the floor.
Please join us on Sunday, June 12th, at Noon, and experience Yin Yoga for yourself at no additional charge. When: Sunday, June 12, 2011
Time: Noon
Cost: Free for students of HYA who have a current class package or membership only.
Pre-requisites: None, Appropriate for All Levels
What to Bring: Yoga Mat, 2 Large Towels, and any props such as blocks or straps that you may already have at home.
Duration: 60 minutes
Late Arrival: None, doors will be locked at 12:00 pm. Please arrive at least 10 minutes early. |

Chaturanga Dandasana Four Legged Staff Pose Chaturanga is an important and enjoyable part of the Sun Salutation and Vinyasa flow. Keeping the integrity of the pose from start to end of your yoga practice is important to receive the many benefits Chaturanga has to offer and avoid injury. Chaturanga is like a push-up, and as such is a great arm strengthener. Benefits: Strengthens the arms, wrists, legs, shoulders, and abdominals.
Instructions:
- Starting from Plank Pose, exhale and slowly lower your body half way down until it is parallel to the floor stopping when your forearms and upper arms are at a right angle (see photo), Chaturanga Dandasana.
- Keep your tailbone firmly in place with your quadricep muscles fully engaged and turned slightly inward. Engage all of your core muscles.
Modification: Until you build enough strength to support the body with the arms, place both knees on the floor.
Note: There's a tendency in this pose for the lower back to sway toward the floor and the tailbone to poke up toward the ceiling. If you find this happening with your body, lower your knees to the floor until you develop enough strength in your arms, back and legs to support you in a parallel position. - Hold your elbows in by the sides close to the torso and push them back toward the heels. Keep the space between the shoulder blades broad. Press the bases of the index fingers firmly to the floor. Lift the top of the sternum and your head to look slightly forward.
- Inhale as you press back up into Plank Pose, completing a full push up.
Advanced: Once you develop the upper body and core strength by practicing this pose, try hovering over the floor for a few seconds before moving to the next pose. Modify by placing your knees on the floor. Ultra Advanced: From Plank Pose, lift one leg off the floor and try moving into Chaturanga while keeping your leg lifted, Trianga. |
Yoga Etiquette Honor Your Studio, Your Teacher, and Your Fellow Students
Front row students are responsible for setting the visual example for everyone in the room. Please follow and keep pace with the instructions given. Moving together as a class allows you to create mindful, meditative movements, and contributes to the energy in the room. We appreciate your help in keeping the hot room safe for students of all levels.
If you need to leave class early, please inform the instructor prior to the start of class and set your mat up in the back of the room close to a door so that you can leave quietly. [Click to learn more...] |
