Summer is just around the corner, a wonderful time of year to start or continue your Hot Yoga practice. Read about the benefits of practicing Hot Yoga in the summer as well as a testimonial from one of our students.

Our posture of the month is Plank pose. Engaging the muscles of your core keeps you stable in balancing and standing postures. Plank Pose goes right to the fundamentals of building core strength.

Hot Yoga in Summer

Have You Lost Your MIND?

Karen This is typically the reaction I get from non-yogis when I shared my passion for HOT yoga in the summertime.

Believe me, I was more surprised than anyone when HYA opened last year and I had the opportunity to practice in my beloved Ahwatukee community in the summer of 2010. I had no excuse, the studio opened and we were full speed ahead.

It was incredible to me that I could enjoy my practice as much if not more in the summer. I forged ahead with my 3-4 days a week and missed it dearly when I went on vacation always looking for a studio in whatever town I was in. Nothing duplicates what we have at HYA, but it's fun to try new things and see what's out there.

My practice brings me back to "my center" and nothing is going to get in the way of that, not some silly thermometer.

After all it's the heat that enables me to get in those hard to reach places in the first place!

Karen, Hot Yogini 12/12

Benefits of Practicing Hot Yoga in Summer

  1. The yoga room is cooler than outside
  2. The relentless heat of Arizona summers can put a strain on you physically and mentally.  Practicing Hot Yoga will keep you balanced during ultra challenging times and temperatures.
  3. Your body is warmer at the start of class allowing you to go deeper into postures. You'll find your overall practice to be better than ever and you will feel great after class.
  4. You will look and feel more confident in your shorts, tank tops and swimsuits!

Tips for Practicing Hot Yoga in the Summer

Hydrate ProperlyProper hydration is extremely important for every physical activity but, due to the increased sweating in Hot Yoga, hydration is even more important.  Drink at least 1 to 1.5 liters of water before every class.  Such preparation will also prevent you from needing or wanting to gulp lots of water during class, which can cause stomach cramps and generally act as a distraction.

Replenish ElectrolytesElectrolytes are salts and minerals, such as sodium, potassium, and calcium that may be lost from the body during periods of profuse sweating.  Symptoms of electrolyte deficiency include dizziness, headaches, cramping and fatigue.  Electrolytes are contained in most sports drinks, but drinks that are low in sugar, e.g. coconut water, are preferable and healthier.  A mixture of water, sea salt and lemon juice can also work to restore lost electrolytes, as well as tomato juice.  In addition, try such foods as avocadoes, bananas and potatoes!

Maintain Proper Nutrition Proper nutrition is also very important. Although we recommend that you come to class with an empty stomach, it is okay to consume a small serving of light foods an hour or so before class to ensure proper nutrition for class. Fruit, fruit juice, raw vegetables, a small serving of almonds or trail mix are all viable options.

Plank Pose
Dandasana
Plank Pose

While the muscles of your core - everything that's not your arms and your legs - always engage to keep you stable in balancing and standing poses, Plank Pose goes right to the fundamentals of core strength
.

Off the Mat, Into Your Life
:
Strong core muscles are needed to your support posture. When the core muscles tire, you wind up slouching

Athletes: Core strength and stability are critical for success in training and racing and for injury prevention.

Instructions:

  1. From the Lunge position, place your hands on the floor beneath your shoulders and step the left foot back into a Plank position.

  2. Position your shoulders to be slightly forward over the wrists. Fingers are spread broadly to diffuse the weight of your body.

  3. Check to make sure that your hands and feet are shoulder width apart.

  4. Keep your shoulder blades in a neutral position and the back of the neck long as you gaze at the floor, slightly forward.

  5. Engage all of your core muscles, including your thighs. Pull your belly button to your spine, and lift your front thighs up toward the ceiling as you lengthen the tailbone toward your heels.

  6. Gently rotate the eye of the elbow toward the front of the room in the same direction as your gaze. This helps engage the shoulder blades and brings your arms into the correct position for Chaturanga push up when flowing through a Vinyasa.

  7. Imagine yourself as one straight line from crown of the head to heels, without any slouching or sagging areas.

Modification: If you feel the least bit unstable or if any part of your front body feels like it is sagging towards the floor, place both knees on the floor.
Benefits:
  • Strenthens the arms, wrists, legs and spine
  • Tones the abdomen
