 Promotional Products as an advertising medium?

 How well does using promotional products help in overall marketing strategy?  
A study conducted by Louisiana State University and the University of Texas at San Antonio compared advertising on TV, Print, and Promotional Products both alone and in various combinations with each other.  The study found some interesting results.
  •  Under advertisement effectiveness divided into five different categories, print was first but promotional items outperformed television across the board.
  • Adding a promotional item to the media mix generated favorable attitudes to the product in all cases.
  • Including promotional items with TV and Print increased referral value as well as credibility of the message.
  • Including promotional items with TV commercials outpaced the two other media alone in message credibility and referral value.
  • In some instances, the use of promotional product as the ad medium alone achieved max. impact, up to 69% in increased brand interest and 84% in creating a good impression of the brand.
  • Promotional items was second only to TV as the preferred source of information about products.
  • In most situations, receiving a promotional items is more effective in developing a positive attitude toward the product or brand than exposure to a TV commercial along with print advertising.
 
The overall conclusions from this study are:
  •  Promotional items may be effectively employed as a stand-alone advertising medium.
  • Once you add promotional items to the media mix, you create impact.
  • Promotional items are a useful information and reminder medium.
  • Promotional items enhance impressions about both the brand and the product.
  • Promotional items contribute to consumer intent to buy.
