"If you give a man a fish, you will feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish, and he will feed himself for a lifetime." By teaching young people to fish in the rivers of their minds, The Fishing School is changing generations.
June, 2011
Dear Friends,

For the second consecutive year, The Fishing School (TFS) partnered with long-time supporter Deloitte LLP for IMPACT Day on June 10, 2011. IMPACT Day is an annual service celebration of Deloitte's commitment to community involvement. Tens of thousands of Deloitte volunteers participate in over 800 community service projects to meet the needs of the nonprofits they support. Click here for more information about Deloitte LLP.

The army arrives

IMPACT Day was held at Kenilworth Elementary School (KES), from which TFS serves third, fourth and fifth graders in our out-of-school time programs. We immediately knew the day was going to be a success when we saw a coach bus delivering an army of approximately 50 Deloitte volunteers. With no time to waste, they got down to business!

TFS's Executive Director, Leo Givs, kicked off IMPACT Day with a few encouraging words. "IMPACT Day is important for two reasons: Deloitte supports the community and our partner school, Kenilworth, receives the benefit. This is a great day for all of us," says Givs.  From there, IMPACT Day went full speed ahead. Scott Decker, John Lippe, Chris Colihan-Grillo, Doug Kantor and Dan Burrell were the team leads and directed volunteers as they rotated shifts of mulching, pulling weeds, planting flowers, relocating irises, painting, organizing the library, and cleaning the music room and the gym.

Deloitte volunteer, DK Mukherjee has, "never done anything like this before. This day has been great! I hope it makes a difference." Robin Lineberger, CEO of Deloitte, made a special presentation to selected students that promised to make the day even greater... a donation of eight bikes! Andre Hunter and Genesis Tackie each received recognition and a bike for achieving 'student of the quarter.' Lania Marshall and Caiphas Parker were also presented bikes and recognized as 'most improved students.'

"TFS is an educational involvement opportunity," says Sean Morris, Deloitte Principal and TFS board member. Morris also commented that, "TFS and IMPACT Day at Kenilworth Elementary School ties directly to our mission to encourage more young people to attend college. We know this starts at the grassroots level."

Founder of TFS,Tom Lewis, and his wife, Lucille Lewis, joined the IMPACT Day project in the spirit of servitude. Mrs. Lewis showed up with her sleeves rolled up and ready to paint! Deloitte volunteer, Rew Dickinson, made note of what he loved most about the day's events. "Helping out the kids and meeting the founder was incredible. I enjoyed the opportunity to make an impact." Mr. Lewis didn't miss the chance to share one of his mottos; this is hard work, but it's also heart work.

The Fishing School thanks Deloitte for their hard work and community impact.
