Partnership Interim Director Announced
The Partnership Board of Directors is pleased to announce appointment of Susan Holden Walsh as Interim Director for the Partnership. Susan will officially begin her position on July 1, 2010, when current Executive Director, Kirsten Walker, begins her maternity leave. Susan Holden Walsh joins
Downtown Bellingham Partnership as interim director with twenty years experience
in marketing, events and public relations. Having begun her career in New York
City, she has worked with entrepreneurial start-ups, nonprofits and Fortune 500
companies across the country, helping to build brand recognition and socially
responsible partnerships. While her professional experience includes
business-to-business and consumer marketing for law firms, banks, food and
beverage companies, breweries, wineries, hotels, restaurants, sporting goods
inventors and non-profits, she has also volunteered with environmental conservation,
economic development and historic preservation organizations. For eighteen years, Susan
owned and managed her consulting firm, Holden McClure in Boulder, Colorado. The
Northwest lifestyle and an opportune job transfer for her husband brought Susan
to Bellingham in 2008. With a BA in economics and Masters in
international business, Susan is excited to apply her experience to assist DBP
in Kirsten's absence. "We have many great
opportunities to keep the heart of Bellingham alive and thriving by supporting
the people who contribute to the downtown core," shared Holden Walsh. "I look forward to doing what I can to assist DBP members in preserving
the essence and growing the activities that make Bellingham the town we all
love." Susan can be reached at the Partnership office (527-8710) or at susan@downtownbellingham.com. |

Downtown Beautification Expands
Thanks to an increase in support for downtown landscaping from the City of Bellingham, the Downtown Bellingham Partnership's 2010 Beautification Program will cover double the area that we were able to landscape in 2009 (see map below for expanded area).
Partnership landscape maintenance employees Peter Gunn and Mike Dalton are working closely with designer Shelley Weisberg of Moonstone Garden Design to ensure downtown is full of color and attractive for visitors, employees and residents throughout the year. Highlights for 2010 will include 45 hanging baskets and new landscaping along Holly St. from Ellis to State St.
The Partnership Beautification Program team will perform the following tasks to ensure the downtown streetscape remains healthy and vibrant:
- New plantings in expanded area.
- Seasonal plantings to enhance the existing landscaping design.
- Weeding: Remove weeds from all landscape beds,
planters, storm drains, sidewalks/curbs, and tree wells within the service area.
- Leaf collection: Remove leaves and
fallen tree material from all areas during fall leaf drop and as
needed thereafter.
- Replacement of plants due to vandalism, natural mortality rates or abnormal weather conditions.
- Mulching, amending soil, pruning and watering as needed for plant health.
The Partnership encourages all of our members to provide feedback on our landscaping efforts. Also, if you notice any vandalism or plant health issues, please report them to peter@downtownbellingham.com. |

Noise Ordinance
The Bellingham City Council is currently considering changes to the City noise ordinance. In a meeting on March 24, Council considered several options, including making the ordinance more objective through use of sound meter measurements and designating an entertainment zone in downtown. A draft ordinance will likely be presented to Council sometime this summer. Stay tuned for further information as it becomes available.
