Winners Make Good Company Legendary Mayor Hazel McCallion recently took some time out of her busy schedule to meet with Canadian National Beach Volleyball Champions Joraver Sangha and Manpreet Chatha. The mayor told the boys about her plans for more sports facilities in the future and even invited their input and their coach's input on one of her committees. |

Gettn' Better - Better than playing Rep?
Our Gettn' Better program is the talk on Ontario Volleyball with rep players and serious middle and high school players coming from as far as Scarborough and Hamilton to partake. But is it better than playing rep ball? Well, maybe not Pakmen rep ball ... but in terms of athlete development even in rep practices players rarely have more than 200 quality 'touches' in a practice. Gettn' Better guarantees you 500 - and last week the players got 700! Why? Few players, high coach to player ratios, and no wasted time on scrimmaging, positioning, strategies and tactics. If you just missed out on making that rep team or want to make one next year, or make your upcoming school team, or simply become a better player there is no program which will improve your skills more. And our coaches? The most decorated around, bar none.

Coaching Tip of the Month Submitted by 3-time coach of the month Kelly Smith
Players need to learn to hit balls which are set far off the net. Players also need to learn to set balls when the setter cannot get to the ball in time. A great drill to teach both these skills is to have one player bounce the ball in the middle of the backcourt straight up with both arms, wait for it to come up, and then set the ball to left side, very loose, outside the attack line, where a teammate is waiting to hit the ball over the net. The hitter should face the player setting the ball, keeping his body open to him and not towards the net. At first he or she should not jump but concentrate on contacting the ball at this angle. When he/she is able to do this, they should start jumping and swinging.
I remember having a fairly weak, poor passing team. We practice this drill each practice and everyone learned to set and hit this ball. We went undefeated that season.
