Etobicoke- After three tournaments and three Bronze medal finishes, the U13 Ms. Pakmen Girls finally struck gold! The team travelled to Etobicoke for the Bugarski Cup, their fourth OVA tournament of the year. Playing well all day keeping almost every game to under 12 points for opponents, the team faced their rivals, Toronto West in the finals. After winning the first game, the girls made a few mental mistakes to allow the second to get away from them. In the third and final game the girls twice staved off game points to come back and win the match. Losing 15-14 in the third game, the girls scored three straight points to win 17-15. | Coaching Tip of the Month
Submitted by 3-time Ontario Coach of the Year, Kelly Smith

Passing is the most important skill in volleyball. Volleyball is a rebound sport, so players cannot rely on possession, like they do in soccer, football, hockey and most other sports. Good balance and positioning are critical for passing a volleyball. Coaches need to spend a lot of time working on footwork, balance and positioning if they want their players to pass well. Coaches should insist that players use a forearm pass when receiving a serve. They may find it more difficult than using their hands at first, but it will get them to move their feet and they will become superior passers over the course of the season.

Profiles: Pakmen clinitian Hernan Humana

Beach Volleyball is a rather unique sport whereby coaches cannot coach or be directly involved in the competitions. Therefore coaches need to prepare their athletes even more to be independent, mentally tough and possess the ability to problem solve themselves during matches. As a result, coaches sometimes do not receive or even expect recognition for their team's accomplishments. We felt the need to promote one coach, Hernan Human, because of his commitment to the growth of the sport and his love of competition. Hernan is best known for coaching Canada's most successful Beach duo John Child and Mark Heese at the 1996 and 2000 Summer Olympics and on the World Tour. Hernan currently runs one of the best beach clubs in Canada, Elite Beach Volleyball Club. The club is well known for player development and has top players in several age divisions.
