Greetings!

Our number one goal at The Financial Guides is to help you be as successful as you can possibly be in all areas of your life: financially, business wise, and personally.  In order to assist you on your path to greatness we will be giving you extra tools to make the journey easier.

Where Were You When I Was a Kid?

We all make the best decisions we can with the knowledge and resources we have available at the time.  So how do we make better financial decisions?  The first thing we need to do is start learning the truth about money as soon as possible.  Whenever I teach my Financial Journeys class one of the most common comments I get is where were you when I was a kid?  If I had learned this stuff in school I would have been so much further ahead.

The unfortunate truth is Canadians have the lowest rate of financial literacy in the westernized world.  Our schools do not teach about money.  Even when you get into college and university and take the finance and economics classes you don't learn anything of real, every day value.  So the vast majority of people are left to make some of the most important decisions of their lives with nothing more than a hope and a prayer.

Our world is becoming more and more complicated especially in the financial realm.  We are sending our future generations onto a playing field that is fraught with dangers and opportunities and where the rules are constantly changing.  So how can we help give our kids, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and young friends a better start then we were given?

This fall the first set in the Financial Foundations series of children's financial books is being released.  These books teach kids the fundamentals about money in a fully illustrated, beautiful setting.  Our goal is to give kids everywhere the tools to ask questions, understand how money works, how to set goals, how to set up a simple budget that works, understand the facts about credit, learn how daily choices affect our lives, and learn how to keep a long term perspective and balance in life.

To pre-order your sets for delivery by Christmas please go to www.financialfoundationsbooks.com/the_books.htm  $10 from every set sold goes to World Vision Canada to help kids around the world get an education as well.  Help us give kids the tools they need to survive and thrive in our complicated world.

-Horace Mann

Referrals Are Earned

As business people we are told over and over again about the importance of referrals.  We are told to ask for them. We are told to base our business on gathering quality referrals from our best clients. I have to agree.  Referrals are the lifeblood of every successful business.

The big thing for me is that because referrals are so precious they need to be earned.  I appreciate every referral I receive and try my best to do an extra special job for the referred person so they are happy, AND to make sure that the person that referred them does not regret the decision to send the business your way.

When someone sends you are referral they are taking a big emotional risk.  What will my friend / family member / co-worker / business associate think of me if they referral doesn't work out?  For a lot of people this risk is just too great and to avoid the potential pain they just don't hand out referrals.

So what are some things you can do to make sure you have earned the right to receive referrals, especially high quality referrals?  First you need to respond to the referral quickly.  Return their phone call or email.  Contact them immediately after being given their information.  Second you need to thank the person that sent you the referral.  A hand written thank you card with a status on the contact goes a long way.  For example:  Dear John, thank you so much for referring Mary to me.  We are meeting on Tuesday, and I will do my best to help her out to make sure you look good.  Third, you need to do a great job in taking care of the referral.

"Referrals come through who you are not what you sell."
