| | Happy Second New Year!
It is the beginning of August, the sun is shining, vacationing is in full swing, and New Year's is a million miles from your mind. But my experience is that every year has two new years; the traditional one on January 1 and the second one being the Tuesday after the Labour Day weekend. The second new year brings the beginning of the school season, the back into the normal swing of things at work, and a new hope for a better future.
Where are you in terms of accomplishing the goals you set for the year? Are you on track, ahead of schedule, or have you fallen behind? Should you be reevaluating if you even want the same goals you chose at the beginning of the year? What adjustments do you need to make in order to put you back into the game or to step it up?
In summer schedules usually go out the window. When fall comes we rush back into the normal grind. What could you prepare in advance to make the transition smooth and forward moving? Do you need to take some time to clean up some physical messes that cause you nothing but grief? Getting rid of crap in our environments gives us physical and mental space. It also makes room to attract the things we want into our lives when we get rid of the stuff that doesn't serve us.
Spend some relaxing time with your family discussing what positive changes you can make in the fall to make everything go easier. Can tasks be delegated to various family members so that everyone is contributing and benefiting? What skills need to be taught / learned so that everyone can help? What extra-curricular activities does everyone want to participate in, and how will that effect scheduling? Are there tasks that can be done differently (ie: menu planning and bulk cooking, rearranging work schedules to better accommodate transportation needs, organizing cupboards, closets, home offices, and kids' rooms) to free up time and money for everyone?
With September approaching we have a wonderful opportunity to begin again fresh and energized. Take some time this August to figure out what small improvements you can make that add up to huge positive results. Step up to the plate with new enthusiasm and maybe even a revised plan of action. You'll be amazed at just how much you can accomplish.
"Be at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbours, and let every new year find you a better man."
-Benjamin Franklin

| Average or Exceptional?
|
|
The world is filled with average. The dictionary definition of the word is: not out of the ordinary, common. But who wants to be average? One of the reasons a lot of people step into the wonderfully exciting world of entrepreneurship is because they want to move beyond average, into the exceptional. Webster defines exceptional as: better than average, superior. If you ask me that sounds a whole heck of a lot better.
So the question is what can I do to move from average to exceptional? The good news is it is not a complicated process. The bad news is like anything worth having or being it takes consistent effort. Every single person is 100% equal on one very important aspect. We all have exactly the same amount of time in every single day. The biggest differentiator between the average and the exceptional people is how they invest their 24 hours.
How do you invest your "free" time? Average has you watching mindless TV, reading pointless tabloids, eating junk food while vegging in front of a computer screen, wasting time with people that hold you back or drag you down. Exceptional has you reading good books that help you learn more to earn more. Exceptional has you exercising and eating healthy for better health and more energy. Exceptional has you socializing with people that challenge you to be more, learn more, and grow more.
What are you doing with your work time? Average has you wasting your energies and efforts putting out fires, working on busy tasks that keep you running but get you nowhere, or constantly reacting to everything around you? Exceptional has you planning so your energies create systems to prevent and minimize problems through creating systems. Exceptional has you focused on your top priorities and your areas of genius so you are moving forward with much greater ease, rather than chasing your tail. Exceptional has you slowing down enough to properly analyze a situation and make good decisions rather than be ricocheted around like a pin ball.
How are you tending your relationships? Average has you neglecting the ones that are most important to you, letting yourself get burnt out and run out of energy, and spending time with poisonous people. Exceptional has you investing time and quality effort into family and friends. Exceptional has you taking care of yourself and not playing the martyr so you have the strength and energy to give to others. Exceptional has you building healthy relationships with people that encourage and support you and that you can in return encourage and support.
Make a commitment today to move from average to exceptional. I guarantee it is more than worth the effort that is required. Rise above the crowd and claim your place amongst the amazing people in the world.
"I'm a workaholic. Before long I'm traveling on my nervous energy alone. This is incredibly exhausting." -Robert Vaughn |
