Something to Think About

"The world is full of abundance and opportunity, but far too many people come to the fountain of life with a sieve instead of a car tank... a teaspoon instead of a steam shovel. The expect a little and as a result they get a little."

Christmas in September

Okay, so far we haven't really had a summer because of the freakish weather, and here I go talking about Christmas in September.  What is wrong with me????  Well to tell you the truth hearing the forecast is for snow this week got me thinking about Christmas.  I know it's still a ways off, but before you care to admit, it will be here.  Christmas is a beautiful and wonderful time of year.  It's also damn expensive.

Most people forget about it until December (men until about noon on December 24th, thank God 7-11 sells gift cards, eh?)  then they are left rushing about like madmen trying to get all the shopping and everything else done in time.  Due to the frantic pace they usually end up spending way too much money which puts them in a crash crunch or deeper in debt.  Not a good way to celebrate or remember the holidays if you ask me.

So how can you reduce the stress AND the expense of Christmas?  One very simple way is to take a little time right now and start making a list.  Who do you need to buy for, are there particular things you want to give to certain people, and what is your budget?  What is your budget and list for things like Christmas decorations, extra food, and alcohol for the seasonal festivities?  Do you attend Christmas parties where you need to purchase tickets, get a new outfit, taxi rides, or hotel rooms?  Also, do you have to travel and how much is that going to cost?

Once you actually have the details laid out in black and white it makes it a lot easier to make informed decisions.  You might decide that you are a little too generous in what you were planning on spending.  You might decide to convince the family and / or group of friends to go with a Pick One Name strategy instead of trying to buy for everyone.  You might decide to skip a lot of shopping and just spend time with people because admit it, most of us have too much "stuff" in our lives and don't need anymore.  You might decide to spend a bit of time and make some super cool homemade gifts like crafts, baking, and gifts of time instead of commercially bought stuff.  Another option is to start shopping early so you have time to find the right gifts for the right people within your budget.

Break with the masses and do things a little different by planning and starting early so you can have an enjoyable and affordable holiday season in a few months.

"From a commercial point of view, if Christmas did not exist it would be necessary to invent it."

You Need No Title to Be a Leader

Recently I was given a great book by Robin Sharma, "The Leader Who Had No Title".  As with all of Robin Sharma's books, this one was full of simple and practical wisdom.   You may have guessed the premise of the book from the title, but the truth is you do not need a title to be a leader.  Whether you are a one person operation, an employee, or a CEO of a large corporation you have a responsibility to bring out the leader in you.

The book talks about the four main points to leading without a title.  The first point is:  You need no title to be a leader.  The second point is:  Turbulent times build great leaders.  The third point is:  The deeper your relationships, the stronger your leadership.  And the fourth and final point is:  To be a great leader, first become a great person.  Today I am going to tell you about You need no title to be a leader.

Acronyms make things much easier to remember and to teach and this book has a few absolute winners.  To teach the point of You need no title to be a leader the acronym is:  IMAGE.  Innovation, Mastery, Authenticity, Guts, and Ethics.

Innovation means be creative in how you do your job.  Always be looking for a way to improve what you do and how you do it.  The world is changing at an ever increasing pace.  Holding onto the old way of doing things means you will be left behind.  Creativity breeds Success.

Mastery means to work on being the absolute best at what you do.  Think in terms of BIW (Best in World).  So few people actually care and put in the time and the effort required to be brilliant that it is a relatively easy thing to achieve for the person that is committed.  Put out nothing less than your very best.

Authenticity means to be real, to be you.  You have unique talents, skills, insights, and wisdom that no one else in the world has.  No one can be a better you than you.  Put the stamp of your personality on everything you do.  Be trustworthy, be someone other people can respect, keep your promises.  Be authentic.

Guts means you need to take chances.  Success and leadership are not for the meek.  Step up to the plate and challenge yourself to stick to the journey.  You have to be unrealistically persistent and wildly courageous.  The world will do all it can to suck you into mediocrity and failure.  Only an internally strong person will make it all the way.

Ethics means to behave in a way that you would not be upset about being published on the front page of your local newspaper.  Do not cut corners.  Do not short change your customer.  Always be honest in all your dealings.  Only do deals where everyone involved wins.  Remember your manners.

"Money, influence, and position are nothing compared with brains, principles, energy, and perserverance."

-Orison Swett Marden
