The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

I always view September as a second new year.  The kids are going back to school, the hussle and bussle of the summer holidays are passed, and life is returning to normal.  Now is the time that we set up our routines that will help us make it through to next July and hopefully for the rest of our lives.  One long term thought that stands out at the beginning of the fall season is financially preparing for post secondary education.

Being the proud mother of a beautiful seven year old year girl I can attest to the fact that she is growing up faster than I thought possible.  Before I know it, and definitely before I am ready for it, my Princess will be heading off to college or university.  With this simple fact in mind, I make sure that I am putting money aside for her Registered Education Savings Plan.

When planning for a child's future university or college needs you have a few options.  I'm partial to RESPs for a number of reasons.  The biggest and best reason is the Canada Education Savings Grant.  For every dollar I contribute to my daughter's RESP, the federal government contributes 20% to a maximum of $500 every year directly into her plan.  In Alberta kids also qualify for the Alberta Centennial Grant which gives $500 for every child born after 2005, and another $100 at age 8, 11, and 14.  You can't beat having "free" money put into your investment to grow.

Another reason I like RESPs is because of the flexibility.  You can choose how much you can and want to invest.  As little as $25 per month or any lump sum over $100.  I have clients that do monthly contributions and top that up with birthday and Christmas money, gifts from friends and family, and money from the kid's summer jobs.  Also, you choose how you want to invest and can change your investment choices depending on your needs and the age of the child.  The closer they are to needing the money for school the lower risk you want to take.

Like with all investing, time is on your side.  The sooner you start the more your money can earn before needing to pay for tuition, books, and other school associated costs.  So get in the game and get time and money working together to get your kids the education they want and need without it breaking the bank of Mom and Dad.

Networking for Fun and Profit

Business is all about relationships and regularly attending good networking events is one of the best ways to build those relationships.  Getting to know people face to face at an event gives you the opportunity to really learn about one another and how you can help one another.  It allows you the chance to find out what the other person does, who their ideal client is, and what their unique selling proposition is.

I love networking.  Finding a good fit with a networking group is one of the best things you can do to move your business forward.  You never know who you are going to meet or what new tidbit of information you are going to learn.  Most people go to groups with the intent of finding new customers for their business, and that is definitely a mainstay of networking, but don't overlook the opportunity to find new suppliers and other contacts.

Networking has brought me many new and wonderful clients.  Networking has brought me speaking engagements and opportunities to further market my business to venues I never would have heard of otherwise.  Networking has introduced me to wonderful people and companies that provide me with a lot of the products and services I use today.  Networking has exposed me to new people and ideas that help me build and fine tune my business.  Networking has introduced me to fabulous new friends

Some fantastic networking groups that you can check out are:  the Chamber of Commerce, Women in a Home Office, eWomen, CGAA, BNI, and Fushsia Factory just to name a few.  The key is to find a group that you feel comfortable with and to become actively involved.  Be a go giver and you will get more back then you imagined possible.  Find out how you can help the other people in the group get what they want and you will always get more of what you want.

You can spend a small fortune on advertising without getting any customers.  While advertising is good and an important part of any marketing plan, it can't be the only answer.  As a business owner you need to get out and press the flesh.  Find a networking group, or a few, and attend regularly.  It takes time and patience to build relationships.  Showing up once or twice and leaving because it didn't instantly impact your bottom line is short term thinking.

"Networking is an essential part of building wealth."

CLIENT PROFILE:
Tony Blocker: Creator of "Sam's World
"

I rarely read newspapers because of the endless barrage of negative and depressing news, but I always make a point of reading the comics.  I love starting my day off with a good laugh going through the funnies.

Fortunately for me, I am very blessed to have the wonderfully talented and slightly warped sense of humour Tony Blocker as one of my clients.  Tony created the irreverent Sam's World cartoon as an outlet for his undeniable talent.  I look forward to seeing the quirky and hilarious thoughts that come out on paper when Tony is given a pen and colours.

If you are looking for a great laugh and a reason to smile check out Tony's work in the Calgary Beacon.  Feel free to contact him about getting a special print of any of his pieces at
