Where do we begin?
Well, the worst is over- let's start there. Most individuals and companies have experienced the economic decline for in excess of one year. Now we are where we need to be- our comparative benchmarks are so low that we can't miss them! It's happening all over. The financial services industry has now recovered to the point where our President is angry and on a quest to recover our investment- good for him! We should get our money back. In addition, good manufacturers are back to some level of profit and most of our clients are at or above break-even. We are leaving the woods and approaching the clearing!
So, your sales are up 2% to last year- good news, right? Well, that depends. Let's say last year was down 30%. Is the increase of 2% good or bad? You need to determine what I call- base line comparisons. If you have a budget, then it could be your budget. If not, you will need to develop your base line comparisons- perhaps intuitively. So, develop your base line comparisons and work toward beating them. This includes both individuals and companies.
Are you still losing money as an individual or as a company even after one year? You should know that families and businesses cannot be successful with continuing losses. How do you return to profit? Start with this:
- Re-engineer yourself and/or your business to generate a profit based on your base line comparisons- allow for at least 6% in savings for an individual or 6% profit if a company. Why 6%- this is what I consider optimal. For more information about the 6%, contact me.
- If re-engineering is not possible (large overhead and, hence, large losses), create a short term disaster plan. Every dollar that you invest in your short-term disaster plan MUST be recovered with interest later. If not, these are sunk costs- the worst kid! The short term plan should be from three to six months- not years!
- Create a long-term plan to start at break-even and then return to the 6% discussed above over time. It could take some time, maybe even years- that's OK- once you are at or above break-even.
As a reminder, the point of this article is that your prior year comparisons might be too low. Please do not be complacent with your performance just because you are beating last year- drive to success using your NEW base line comparisons!
