Featured Article

It is difficult to pick a specific topic for this month's article. The economy still varies wildly by market and there are no real signs of stabilization. Still, there is one common thread that I see in almost all businesses- customer service is terrible! There, I said it. The average employee's stress is transferred from the business to the customer with blazing speed. Layoffs are common-place. Most businesses have stopped trying to win the war for talent (not sure why). Training budgets have been slashed or eliminated. Outside sales associates cannot travel as much (if at all) and expenses are kept to a minimum. It is as if management is saying that travel, communication and training was unnecessary and discretionary- nothing could be further from the truth. What we need is to strategically INVEST in our employees and define the return that is expected for this investment. So, what can you do?
- Get the best talent- now, while talent is still available.
- Get involved with as many customers as possible. If you are a sales associate, ask for help with closing sales and with calling customers after the fact to determine customer satisfaction.
- Set a budget (most companies do not have budgets at the associate level) and invest the appropriate amount of resources (time and money are the scarcest resources) to drive the budget.
- Require a return on investment computation for all expenditures. Form example, if $1,000 will be invested in training can the business reasonably expect that net cash flow will increase by, let's say $3,000 (a three times return on investment). If so, invest.
