Welcome from Stacey
stacey hed shot

Your heart is pounding, your face is a shade of red you hardly recognize, your hair is plastered to your face. You look at  your yoga instructor, mumbling under your breath "this can't be yoga". You barely remember your name, your eyes are bloodshot, and the pregnant woman to your right is making you look bad. You're receiving a serious whooping and is that sweat or tears?  And then it hits you....you've found a new home.

Welcome to Bikram Yoga North Texas.  Y'all come join us!

Online testimonials

Our brand spankin' new website now includes a page where you can add your own story or testimonial about the power of Bikram yoga. Let's face it, we all come to the room in various stages of discontent and angst (whether we realize it at the time or not) but when the yoga transforms us, we want to tell the world about how we're now diggin' our existance (without the use of mind altering substances).   We want to hear those stories!  Just go to the "community" section and click on "share your success story" in the drop down menu. Follow the easy directions and you, too, can offer your take on how you got to the hot room and what it's done for your mind, body and life since then.  Your input is a valuable part of what makes Bikram Yoga North Texas so great so please, tell us all about yourself.

Hey there loyal yogis!

The three digit heat seems endless but we're still mentally cool and calm in the Bikram hot room and dreaming of Fall.  This month is packed with events locally and in our studios. In September we say a temporary "good bye" to two of our yoginis on their way to Bikram teacher training in Los Angeles.  Yasmine Saba and Lisa Janka will be gone for 9 weeks as they blaze their way through two classes a day and one on Saturday in preparation for returning home and amazing us all with their new skills.  We also say "welcome" to Courtney Green from Arizona who will be teaching and working at the front desk and Kari Trout (Kali Trout's little sister) who will also be a smiling addition to our front desk staff.

Join us for Free Day of Yoga on September 5th, take a cooking class, sign up for a 60 day challenge, or just come in and take yoga with our fun, friendly community of yogis.  Be sure to check out the video at the end of this newsletter for a "pick me up".  Sometimes we need a little extra inspiration to remind us that the only constant is "change" and that we are capable and strong and we already possess everything we need to create our best life.

Go get 'em Yogi's, let's have a GREAT September!

Student of the Month:  Allen Keith
allen and margaret keith

Allen Keith had always taken on physical challenges in his life without a second thought:  running, mountain biking, even triathlons but he didn't know a true challenge until he took his first bikram yoga class.  HIs entire life changed in September, 2009 when he walked into the Grapevine studio.

"I was the guy you would see running in 100 degree temperature (and yes I know that's crazy)!  Nevertheless, all of the running and biking still did not prepare me for my first, second, or third bikram yoga class," Allen said.

His girlfriend (now, wife) Margaret and her brother, Jude, had just started bikram yoga for and always "looked like a mess" when they got home at the end of class, he said.  Nevertheless,  Allen still didn't think they had any idea what "challenging" meant when it came to working out.  He decided to take a class with them and by the end of it, he, too, "looked like a mess".  That class turned into a few more and then a 60 day challenge.  Allen said he has never looked back or doubted the power of bikram yoga for a second since then.

"Bikram has increased the range of motion in my left arm and both knees," he said.  "In the past, I would usually catch a cold or sinus infection three or four times a year.  Now, I rarely have any sick days. I may step on a scale from time to time but I don't worry about what it says.  Bikram has given me the confidence to know that my body is healthy and my mind is clear."

Allen says he usually takes two or three classes per week and sometimes strings a few classes together in a row but has found that bikram yoga is the best balance for his personal and professional life.

"For those of you who have not completed a 60-day challenge, you owe it to yourself to find the time and dedication to take the challenge.  It's not easy...after all, it's 5,400 minutes of Bikram.  However, the pride and sense of accomplishment you feel each day you put up a star will carry you through the good days and the bad.  Go for it!  Namaste!"

Ife Togun, yoga teacher and manager of our new Arlington location, has begun writing for www.yogamodern.com and has published his first piece online about the mirrors in the hot room.

Besides being an impressive example of health and fitness in every class he teaches, Ife can write like a mad man!  Here's an excerpt but you can read the entire article at the link below:

There are many things about Bikram yoga that people find peculiar.  The most obvious (obviously) is the heat, 105 degrees of pure unadulterated sweat producing heat.  Then there's the carpet, which most people find disgusting at first but, like the heat, eventually come to embrace.  Finally, there are the mirrors.

Bikram yoga requires at least one set of mirrors at the front of the room, but most Bikram yoga studios have two or three mirrored walls.  While this is standard practice in most major gyms, it has been a sticking point for a lot of non-Bikram yogis and yoginis.  The mirrors seem to them like vain temptations, an invitation to admire one's flesh (while ignoring the mind and spirit) continuously for 90 minutes. The mirror to those who do not understand is nothing more than three walls of vainglory, hubris of the highest order.

However, the mirror is a tool, and like any other tool the mirror can be misused.  It's intended purpose (which I'll talk about in a minute) is not one of vainglory but of Self-discovery.  We can choose to look into the mirror, recognize the beauty of the Self and use that recognition to enhance our understanding of ourselves and others.  Or, like Narcissus before us, we can become so enthralled with our reflection and drown in our own self-admiration.  Same tool, different outcomes. When used correctly, the mirror becomes a didactic tool that open up levels of the self that may not have been possible otherwise.

Kate & Stella's "Pranayama Pet Corner"Pillow Pet of the month
Many times, there is no one better in our world to teach us the power of breath than our fur children.  They lay on their dog beds and kitty pillows with complete abandon and trust...breathing slowly and calmly while utter chaos erupts around them.  Vacuum cleaners, dish washers, loud human children, blaring TV's and hail beating on the doors and windows matter not.  Our pets know how to CHILLAX!

This month's pet is a tad out of the ordinary, as you can see, but even though OJ looks domesticated, he is one tough stuffed cat and has logged the miles to prove it.  In fact, he's about to log some more when Yasmine Saba leaves this month for teacher training.

He's not just a part of the Bikram Yoga North Texas staff, he's also a car seat cover (especially useful for hot buns in the summer) and will expertly become a much needed companion for Yasmine during the 9 weeks of daily doubles and once on Saturday classes.  As part of his long list of life skills, OJ will also add flight pillow, bed decoration, back cushion and lonely middle-of-the-night snuggle pillow abilities.  What a stud!  You, too, can pay homage to OJ when he returns with Yasmine, soon to be a brand spankin' new bikram yoga teacher.  Take good care of her, OJ!

This is for all you 60 day challengers, way-too-busy parental units, ambitious young 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70 year-old sometimes puzzled yogis and everyone else on the planet who struggles each day with sporadic life lessons we shake our collective heads at. The continual message is always this: If you want something...whether it's a new job, a new relationship, a new attitude or a new life,  go get it. Period.  And don't let the details get in the way.   (Remember, we've always got your back right here in the hot room!)  Enjoy!
