The Church of the Holy Faith / Faithway
Santa Fe, NM
January 2010

Fr. Ken and Ming

Dear Friends,

Grace to you, and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. We begin a new year, a new decade, a new chapter in our life together. I pray for you that this year will be particularly blessed, that you will come to know more fully the grace of our Lord working in your life.

To that end, I strongly encourage to sign up for one of the Alpha sessions that will begin this month.  You may also want to join one of the Bible Studies we offer. Groups meet on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. You may join at any time. Perhaps you will commit to a month and see if it helps you in your spiritual life. Studying the scriptures in a group of people seeking to deepen in their relationship to Jesus is always a most rewarding experience. And as you deepen in your relationship to our Lord, because we are one Body, we will all deepen in that relationship. In a world that is so chaotic we need to stay focused on what is important and what is meaningful.

On Sunday, January 24, we will gather to celebrate our life together at the Annual Meeting and dinner. Along with the Financial Reports and the Rector's charge to the parish, we will be electing three vestry members and one representative to the Diocesan Convention that will elect our new bishop. I hope you plan to attend this annual meeting and help us celebrate the good news of God's love for us.

God bless you in this New Year,

Kenneth J.G. Semon

Guy Gronquist

I am a Denver native, but spent 30 years in England before moving to Santa Fe about 15 months ago with my wife Cathy and our two daughters. Going originally to study at Cambridge, I focused on the reign of Henry VIII, during which the Anglican Church was founded. When I finished my PhD, we decided to stay in England and I went to work in investment banking, from which I am now retired. While in London, we were active members of our local Anglican church, and I spent 15 years on the Parish Council, most of that time as treasurer.

We have been very fortunate to experience firsthand how Holy Faith lives its mission statement:  after 30 years in London, although we had been coming to Santa Fe for many years, our transition has been difficult and turbulent at times.  One anchor has remained constant, and that is the Church of the Holy Faith.  We no longer refer to them as the "Comfortable Words" in the Eucharist, but Christ's promise to refresh "all ye that travail and are heavy laden" has been kept for us in the sacraments, the preaching, teaching and music, and the warm welcome we have received from parishioners living their faith.

I hope to repay part of that generosity, if elected, by bringing my financial and church governance experience to the Vestry.  I plan to continue to serve as a reader, helping at the homeless lunches, and as a board member of the homeless shelter.

Ashley Margetson

I have been a member of Holy Faith for 24 years. My husband Paul and I brought up our family in this church. Our baby daughter, Allison, was baptized here 22 years ago and Christian, Jordan, and Allison were all confirmed here. At Holy Faith, I am an acolyte, chalicist, licensed Lay Eucharistic Minister,  and a lector. I was a Delegate to the Diocese of the Rio Grande Convention of 2009, in El Paso.  I am a Daughter of the King, and have just served a one year term on the vestry in 2009.  Most of our work this past year has been spent supervising the "clean-up" of the books, and dealing with the Coleman lawsuit. Many of you gave me your opinions on this topic, and along with the facts that I had, I have consistently voted against allocating any further funds to the former rector. This lawsuit may take awhile to be resolved, and I would like to see it through.

I appreciate the Bible based faith that Holy Faith stands for, and the scriptural training we get in our worship and teaching. I believe in the Apostle's and Nicene Creeds.

I can offer some useful qualities as a vestry member at Holy Faith.  I am committed, very organized, and a hard worker with the ability to think outside the box. People say I am smart, and I bring business experience, 2010 marking 21 years with Sothebys International Realty. Mostly, I love Jesus and I love Holy Faith. I pray that God would use me and the talents He has given me to help His church thrive, attract more people to His word, and further His glory.

Mike McGonagle

Wendy Dunaway and I have been married for more than five (5) years. Our combined family is very close although geographically separated. Wendy has two (2) grown daughters, and two (2) twin grandsons living in the east. My daughter lives in Albuquerque, and my granddaughter lives in the east also.

I was raised and educated in Colorado graduating from the University of Colorado with a B.S. degree in Accounting and Finance.

While living in Santa Fe since 1964, I have been active in various companies and businesses. For the last twenty (20) years I have been President, Director, and Shareholder of Century Financial Services Corporation, which is the corporate parent of Century Bank, of which I am also an Officer and Director.

I have been active over the years with a variety of community and non-profit organizations.

Since joining Holy Faith about one (1) year ago, Wendy and I have attended church and church functions regularly.

The Holy Faith Mission Statement is very clear and understandable, further, it is supported by both Wendy and me.

As a vestry member I am sure I can be the most help in the financial areas of the Church.

Bill Shrecengost

I joined the Episcopal Church in Lincoln County, New Mexico, in the early 1950's; served on the Vestry, as an usher, a Eucharistic Lay Minister, and led complete Christian services by myself at chapels in Fort Stanton, Lincoln, and Glencoe, New Mexico. I moved to Santa Fe and had my membership transferred to, and became active in Holy Faith in 1993.

I have served as an usher during most of this time.

I have scheduled lectors (lay readers) and read during nearly all of this time.

I have served two elected and two appointed terms as voting delegate to Diocesan Convocation/Conventions, most of the terms as voting Northeast Deanery member.

I served as a licensed Lay Eucharistic Minister for many years, as well as serving at the altar.

I have participated actively in Faith at Work since its inception at Holy Faith years ago.

Ray Wallace

Ray Wallace and his wife, Martha, have lived in Santa Fe for 11 years.  Ray has retired from two careers:  34 years as an officer in the U.S. Navy, and seven at Los Alamos National Laboratory working in facility operations and management.  He still does part-time consulting in the energy-related field.  A native of San Antonio, Texas, he has a BS degree from the U.S. Naval Academy, an MBA degree from the University of Phoenix and completed a year's course of study at the Indian National Defense College in New Delhi, India.  He is a registered Professional Engineer. Ray and Martha have two children and five grandchildren.

At Holy Faith he is a member of the Outreach and Missions committee, ushers, and participates in two Bible studies.  He was Holy Faith's Junior Warden for three years, 2005 - 2007, and chaired the Stewardship Committee in 2006. Ray fully supports Holy Faith's mission statement and feels very blessed to have been led to this congregation.  He believes the focus on declaring the Gospel of Jesus Christ is the source of the church's vitality and strength in the community.  He sees the role of Vestry members to be responsible to the congregation for the governance of the church, as well as seeing that Holy Faith's mission of proclaiming the Gospel is always at the center of everything we undertake.  He believes it strengthens Holy Faith if Vestry members are participants in a wide array of church activities.

Webb Wallace

My wife Ann and I have been married for 46 years.  We have two grown children and three grandchildren.  We moved from Dallas to Santa Fe about 20 years ago. I have been a real estate developer, consultant and investor since graduating from the Stanford Business School in 1965.  My undergraduate degree is from the University of the South, Sewanee.

Ann and I have been members of Church of the Holy Faith since the mid 1990's. I have been a member of the Finance Committee for a number of years, an usher many years and a member of the Wednesday Men's Bible Class.

If elected to the Vestry I will support our position as a conservative parish as reflected in our core values and at the same time press for whatever reasonable action we can take to attract more young families and children to our parish. Even at a time when finances are tight, or perhaps especially at a time when finances are tight, we need to invest in the growth of our parish.  We are moving in that direction and need to continue to do so.

Property Notes / Bill Adrian

It is that time of year when we have to deal with snow and ice, and we have the danger of slipping or getting hit on the head!  There are some actions that you can do to help make it safer for yourself and others:

Ø      Wear appropriate boots or shoes that have a sole that is not slippery on ice or wet surfaces.

Ø      Be cautious when walking in areas that are in the shade. For example, the sidewalk along the north side of Palen Hall never receives any sunshine so any moisture or compressed snow turns into ice very quickly.

Ø      There is handicapped parking on the west side of the church that does receive sunlight and clears off and stays dry better than the parking spaces at the north side of Palen Hall.  If you do not have a handicapped parking sticker, please do not use these spaces. Leave them for someone that truly needs to park there.  Also, I have learned that the city of Santa Fe has started to enforce designated handicapped parking on private parking lots.

Ø      Look out for ice and snow falling off of the roof on the north side of Palen Hall, and the west side of the Church.  Especially in the middle of the day, when the heat from the sun and the heat lost from the buildings cause the snow and ice to start sliding.

At least we do not have to worry any more about pieces of brick breaking off from the Conkey House parapet!

The Meditation Garden is another area that has a lot of ice and snow falling down.  If you wish to visit a loved one interred there, please look to see what is hanging overhead before entering. Or make arrangements ahead of time for the sidewalk to be shoveled for you if there has been a recent snow fall.

We know the gutters need to repaired and realigned to drain better. And we have wanted to add heat tapes in the gutters and along the edge of the roof to allow better drainage.  But, we have had to allocate time and funds to other projects with higher priority during the last few years. Hopefully, in 2010, we can do something for at least those gutters that cause the greatest threat to those below, or have the potential of causing water seepage into the building.

We have several canales and downspouts that drain onto the sidewalk along Faithway Street, which causes ice, especially overnight.  Be cautious when walking there.

The part-time sextons assist with snow shoveling when they come in the evenings.  But, during the day we only have myself available to shovel.  Primary walkways are done first, before we do all of the sidewalks around the buildings.

We are planning, in 2010, to upgrade and add handrails at some of the entrances to make them safer.

If there has been a snowfall and you are planning to come into the Church that day, please check with your group leader to see if your meeting is still scheduled.  If you do not have a set time to be here, allow enough time for us to get the sidewalk and parking lot cleared and salted/sanded.

We use an ice melt that contains magnesium chloride.  It is more expensive that regular "salt", but it causes less damage and it works at colder temperatures.

CJ Landscaping continues to provide a truck with plow and a tractor to help move the snow off of the parking lot and away from the shaded areas. When there has been a snowfall, please check in the office before you leave your car in the parking lot in order to walk downtown or conduct non-church business near by. There are times due to the time and amount of snow fall when we may bring in the plow and tractor during the day to move snow, and we can not do a good job if your car is in the way.

Also, if you intend to leave a vehicle overnight in the church parking lot due a snow storm, please notify us or it may get towed if it does not have a church sticker.

Thank you,

Bill

International Missions

Mr Baby, the director of Jaipur Children's Aid, has been very sick with malaria and dengue fever, and in need of new housing. These notes were received via email by parishioner Martha Wallace.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

"Praise God." We have shifted to a new house .This place is a little far from the other place where we stayed before. We have just got the internet connection 15 minutes back. Sending the first mail to you all.

The past 2 months were really hectic and full of tensions and worries. As you all know that I had malaria and dengue fever at first, and which I became alright, but I again had the malaria attack twice. Once when we were there in the old house and once after when we shifted to the new place. Once when I recovered Sheela fell really sick because of her breathing problems. Since some months she was having a real hectic time, busy 24 hours and no rest at all. She never even used to sleep properly. She has been continuously having wheezing (difficulty in breathing) because of which she could not even walk for a while. She was taken to the doctor and checked for her lung function and the reports came as her lung functioning is really low. Doctor has asked her for complete rest and very proper care about her health . So we all were again worried about that.

Our kids are all doing well. Their exams are going on. Bittu is also having her exam.

I extremely apologize for not keeping touch with you for a while. We were in a real bad situation here and the shifting work was really hectic. The packing and unpacking and all the government and other formalities for everything has to be done. We have just got the telephone connection today only.

I hope you can understand the situation out here. Now everything is getting back to normal. Please do keep all of us in your prayers.

Faith at Work Community Outreach

What a splendid holiday season we experienced in our Faith at Work offices as we collected, wrapped and distributed gift and food boxes to our families the week of Christmas.  We had so many "elves" sharing their time and talents to create a holiday for people who might not otherwise have experienced the Love in this season.  Twenty-three families, including 32 adults and 74 children, were "officially" adopted by individuals, families and organizations.  An abundance of gift cards, gloves, scarves, and hats were contributed for homeless youth and adults and were distributed to the Interfaith Shelter, First Contact Street Outreach, Healthcare for the Homeless, Santa Fe Community Services and individuals who visited our office.  Many clothing items and toiletries for homeless people and people in need were also donated.

Clients of Faith at Work also experienced the generosity of the Community Services Department of the Santa Fe Police Department.  Turkeys and hams contributed to SFPD were distributed to 43 FAW client families.  Five children went "shopping with a cop" and five families also received gift certificates from Whole Foods and the SFPD.  We are blessed by this cooperative community spirit that supports our clients!

Among the groups/organizations that contributed so generously to make this a joyful holiday were members of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Santa Fe, Church of the Holy Faith, Church of the Holy Family, Genzyme Labs, the NM Department of Taxation and Revenue led by their Human Resource Department, the office of Dr. Paul Mills, Fraser Med. Center Pharmacy, Rollerz Only and NM Lifestyles Car Clubs and the Service Club of Santa Fe Indian School.  Individuals who contributed gifts, food boxes and/or wrapped gifts in Santa's FAW Workshop included Mary Adams and Edith Tichonchik, Betty Lou Dale, Ed and Karen Duran, Diana Grabowsky, Shelby Green, Dora Horn, Jack and Molly Lott, Larry Luck, Evie Longenette, Deb and Todd Miller, Nel and Simon Mostert, Nancy Nofield, Dot Rose, Madison and Zachry Simpson, Kay Swindell and Marilyn Winter-Tamkin.  Thanks to Kay for her coordination of sign-up at Holy Faith!  I hope no one has been missed. We and our clients very much appreciate the generosity of each and everyone.

As we enter 2010, a new decade with hope for New Beginnings our clients continue to be in need of mattresses and springs, couches, end tables and dining tables and chairs.  Food items needed include pancake mix, syrup, canned milk and dry cereal.  Your linen contributions have been quite generous.  Our primary needs now are blankets, pillows and hand towels.  We appreciate season-appropriate clothing--only for winter and colder temperatures.  And we always appreciate your financial support.  FAW is currently engaged in fund raising and if you have not been contacted and wish to contribute to our client funds and casework support please call for information on how to make that happen.

We continue to serve as the fiscal sponsor as a donation point for contributions to the Interfaith Shelter.  In addition to clothing, there is an ongoing need for toiletries and paper goods.

You are invited to visit our office and learn about volunteer opportunities.  We would appreciate assistance with sorting and organizing clothing for children, men and women, toiletries and food.  Volunteer support for taking phone calls and furniture pick-up would also be appreciated!  We could not make this incredible support possible without our wonderful corps of volunteers!

Blessings to you in 2010!  May Love and Compassion be with you.

Angela and Diana
