Faithways
Greetings!

Welcome to the first cyber-edition of Faithways!

From Fr. Ken Semon

Fr. Ken and MingDear Friends,

This is our first edition of the Faith Way that is almost exclusively electronic.  In an effort to run our parish as economically as possible we have chosen to save on the ever rising costs of postage, paper, and print, and distribute our communications by email and internet in every possible instance.  Fr. Curt's weekly communications have proved to be very effective and have been very well received. I have heard more positive comments about his weekly communication than almost anything we have done in the last year.

The month of November is a busy time. We are running the stewardship campaign through November 22. We hope everyone will be able to take the time to pray and consider what their annual giving will be for God's work at Holy Faith. Of course the standard for giving has been the tithe since Old Testament times. I know only a few Episcopalians who have been able to meet that standard, but heartily recommend you consider calculating what percentage of your income you pledge at this time and, if you are happy with the percentage you are giving, that is fine. But if you wish to set a higher goal for yourself, I heartily commend you do so and can promise you will experience a new sense of spiritual well-being. One finds a joy and freedom in giving. The idea is counter-cultural to be sure.  Instead of accumulating everything you can, try giving away more than you have been giving.  You need not be a slave to the accumulation of money.  Gods loves a cheerful, joyful giver and as one gives, one experiences a greater joy and freedom.

On Saturday, November 7, Bishop Frey will be preaching and celebrating the sacrament of Confirmation at 5:00 pm in the Chapel. On November 15 we will have a special guest preacher, The Very Rev. Peggy Patterson, former dean of the Cathedral of Delaware and presently the chaplain for Odyssey Hospice in Santa Fe. Throughout the week of November 15 we will feature the photographic exhibition of "The Faces of the Homeless," in Palen Hall and then on November 22 we will celebrate our annual Harvest Potluck dinner at 5:00.

Please remember in your prayers our homeless guests and those on our streets this winter, and pray for the Church.
God bless you,

Kenneth J.G. Semon

Thanksgiving Day Holy Eucharist - 10am

Join your Holy Faith family on Thanksgiving Day morning at 10am as we celebrate the Holy Eucharist.  If you have friends or family visiting from out of town, no problem!  Invite them to join us, as well.

Faith at Work Community Outreach

The winds are carrying a deeper chill as we gaze on the brilliant splendor of Autumn.  The need for warmth brought a number of walk-in clients to request coats and mittens for themselves and their children this month.  During the first three weeks of October Faith at Work received 73 calls for rent or mortgage assistance, 51 calls for utilities assistance and an additional 26 calls for other types of support, including 16 requests for warm clothing.  Diana has packed house wares and coordinated furniture delivery for eight individuals or families so far this month. We anticipate that November 2nd the telephones will ring all day as people queue up for November financial support.

The financial assistance we were able to provide averted eviction of families from their housing and utility cut-offs, as well as support of material goods for individuals leaving the Esperanza Shelter and the Sobering Center.  Home-Health-Hope.  That is our vision of what we want to achieve for individuals and families in Santa Fe.

This month we will again prepare a Thanksgiving Dinner for homeless teens.  Holy Faith has generously agreed to allow us to prepare the dinner in their kitchen on the morning of Tuesday, November 24th.  We will deliver the dinner to First Contact Youth Outreach at noon.  Contributions of food or money to purchase food would be appreciated.  We will prepare 4-5 turkey breasts and two hams, mashed potatoes and gravy, and vegetables.  In addition we'll need cranberry sauce, fruit juices, rolls and butter, pies, fresh fruits such as oranges, apples and pears.  If you'd like to join us for an hour or so to assist with preparations, we'd enjoy your company!

Client needs include the following:
Clothing-all sizes coats, sweaters, long-sleeved tees to layer, sweats, tennis or hiking shoes, sox.  Also clean underwear for boys and girls.  Women's slacks/jeans, size 18.
Food-snack bars, meals in a can, powdered or canned milk, pancake mix, cereals, fruits and vegetables, and fruit juices.
Linens--blankets, towels, sheets and pillowcases, mattress pads, pillows and throw rugs.
Furniture--mattresses and springs, couches and side chairs, tables and chairs, end tables, small dressers.
Toiletries in travel sizes, including chap-stik and foot powder.

The Winter Homeless Shelter of the Interfaith Community Shelter Group is scheduled to open November 1.  Faith at Work is a donation point, as well as the fiscal sponsor, for the shelter.  Contributions that will be appreciated include: paper goods such as plates, bowls, plastic flatware, cups, glasses, napkins, paper towels, toilet tissue and large garbage bags and clothing, including heavy jackets, sweaters, sox, underwear, hats and gloves, and shoes for men, women and children.  Blankets and winter weight sleeping bags will be distributed for those who remain outdoors.

We always appreciate your financial support and invite you to join our group of twenty committed and talented volunteers-pick up furniture donations, sort and organize  clothing, house wares and/or food, deliver food from the Food Depot to low-income housing residents, deliver goods to other non-profit agencies, take calls and welcome clients, or assist with fund raising.  You can help make a difference in the lives of low-income individuals and families and homeless people in Santa Fe.

This month FAW will also begin preparations for Christmas.  We would welcome volunteers who can assist us with "Adopt a Family," gift shopping and wrapping during December.  Give me a call if you are available!

May we each find ways to share our gratitude and appreciation for the gifts that we have received-especially our health, warm homes and the love of family and friends.  With gratitude and thanksgiving for your ongoing support.

Blessings,    Angela Merkert, Executive Director                   angela@faithatworksf.org

Saharawi Refugee Camp - Tindouf, Algeria

Mission CampOn November 5th, Holy Faith's own, Katina... who is preparing for cross-cultural work in the Western Mediterranean region...
leaves for 11 days to travel to this remote refugee camp in the Sahara Desert. She goes with a team of 33 people lead by Christ The Rock Community Church in Wisconsin for Project: Left Behind. The 160,000 inhabitants of this refugee camp are Saharawi people forced out of their homeland of Western Sahara 34 years ago. Once a colony of Spain and now occupied by Morocco, Western Sahara is waiting for a UN-supervised referendum so the people can choose independence or integration with Morocco. They are hoping for their right to self-determination. They have been waiting since 1976.

Part of what we do as a team from all over the US is to advocate for the Saharawi people in their plight; to help tell their story. It all starts with building relationships. As an Arab and Muslim people, the Saharawi have extended the hand of hospitality, inviting us to their world and into their homes. The Saharawi people value the opportunity to be exposed to other cultures, other political systems, and other religions. They believe these experiences will enrich their people as a whole. As Christians, our goal is not to convert them to Christianity. Our goal is to love them well and demonstrate the love of Christ through our interaction as a team, with their leaders, and with the people themselves. The results we will entrust to God.

Our work in the camps includes children's programs as well as an English Center for adults, seminars with young women to teach about value and self-worth, seminars with Imams to dialogue about commonalities and beliefs, and worship concerts.

This invitation from the Saharawi people gives us the opportunity to live with them, eat with them, participate in their daily lives, laugh with them, come along side them to demonstrate God's love and through Him a hope and a future. Please pray for travel mercies, good health, safety, the strength and energy to live as a refugee for 7 days and nights!

In His Service,
Katina

Alpha at Holy Faith - Coming in January!

Alpha is an opportunity to explore the meaning of life in a relaxed, friendly setting.  The Alpha course usually meets once per week for 10 weeks, and includes an amazing one-day or weekend getaway.

Each session, people enjoy great food, laughter and learning in a fun and friendly atmosphere where no question about life or God is seen as too simple or too hostile... questions like: Is there a God?  Why am I here? Where did I come from?  Where am I going?

To sign up, or for more information, contact Fr. Curt at curt.norman@gmail.com.  You can also visit the Alpha Course website by clicking here.

Winter Shelter Help

As many of you are aware, the Interfaith Coalition has secured a building for an emergency homeless shelter this winter - the old Pete's Pets building on Cerrillos Road. Volunteers from area religious organizations are joining forces to do intake from 6:00 to 9:00 pm, and to provide dinner and breakfast for those staying at the shelter for various weeks through the winter season. Holy Faith's first week begins November 29 and ends December 5. If you would like to help at the shelter as an intake volunteer, serving dinner, or if you would like to provide food for meals or snacks that week, please contact Holy Faith's coordinator, Clare Bruno, at 466-8981.

Annual Harvest Potluck

Come celebrate Thanksgiving a few days early. On November 22, we'll gather in Palen Hall at 5:00 pm for a potluck dinner. Our Hospitality Club will provide the turkey - you'll bring the rest! Sign up sheets will be up on the bulletin board outside the Palen Hall kitchen beginning Sunday, November 8. Please sign up soon so we know how many to plan for.

Fall Pledge Drive

Our fall pledge drive is underway and we hope to have all pledges in by November 22. Please drop yours in the alms basin on Sunday mornings, or send it to the parish office.  If you haven't received your pledge mailing, please contact Amy at (982-4447, ext.105) or amy@holyfaithchurchsf.org . We count on your generosity as we look ahead to 2010 and the work of this parish. Thank you!

Parish Directory

Many, many, thanks go out to the volunteers who have worked diligently to pull together our 2010 parish directory: Frank Hart, who coordinated the process, as well as  making phone calls to as many of you as possible to schedule you for  a photo session with Life Touch, andoverseeing the photo sessions; Jim Overton for hours of work editing and formatting our "action shots," and the photos of parishioners who could not be here for the formal sessions, as well as the doing the layout and design for the directory; Ed Colson, "Photographer Extraordinaire," for taking "action shots" and any other photos requested (often of very short notice); Gail Davis for giving up numerous afternoons to do the data input for the roster; Mary Dale Gordon, Janet Kaye,  Diana Lautens, Gene Pattison, Scott Rasmussen, and Susan Christi Risen, for proof reading, making phone calls, and otherwise pitching in to help us have the most up to date roster we can.  Thanks to all of you for your extraordinary efforts. It couldn't have happened without you!

We hope to have the final Directory by mid December.

When You're in the Hospital

Please be sure to call the parish office to let us know if you are in the hospital! Privacy laws prevent hospital staff from allowing clergy from one denomination to view the lists of other denominations. Our clergy also find that, in the course of the admissions procedures, the information is often incorrect or omitted even when parishioners ask to be listed as "Episcopalian," so please call!

Tuesday Evening Bible Study

Property Notes from Bill Adrian

The speakers for the church arrived on October 30! They will be installed on November 18, along with some additional switching.  Van Horn will be painting them to match the color of the ceiling.  Burt Lehman will also be assisting with the install. A big thank you to them and to Jim Overton for helping get this project done!  It took much longer than we anticipated, but we should have this phase done by the end of the month.  Next year we will review whether there is still a need for wireless assistant hearing devices.

With the new audio system, we will have the capability to digitally record services, if we can find some volunteers to assist with the monitoring of the system. (You will be given full training.) It is basically automatic; you make sure it is turned on, listen and adjust the recording as it occurs and then shut it off.  Any one interested should contact Bill to schedule training.

The official final inspection of the parapet is scheduled for November 17.  The general contractor is still waiting for the final bills from the sub-contractors before he can give us the final total cost.  Additional funding of $15,000 has been placed in the capital funds checking account to help cover the bill when it arrives.

In addition, the $75,000 authorized for capital fund projects in 2010 has also been deposited.  As soon as the parapet project is paid for, we will be reviewing the list of unfinished 2009 projects and the 2010 list, prioritizing them and will begin to address them. Any one interested in helping or wishing to see what is on the lists should contact Scott Bernard or Bill.

One of the 2010 projects will be the installation of the new columbarium in the Meditation Garden.  This will occur in the spring.  It will match the design of the existing three columbaria.  If you are interested in reserving a niche, please contact Amy.

We will be coordinating the installation with the work funded by the Gift Shop that will occur in the Garden next year.  A second planning meeting will be held on November 17 to further establish the plan for 2010.

Currently the Gift Shop is also funding the addition of electrical heat to their two rooms. George Amos is coordinating and doing much of the wire run.  Santa Fe Electrical Services is advising us as to how to do it, and they will make the final hook up to ensure we are in compliance with all building codes and standards. George has been grateful for the assistance of Don Pattison and Jeff Wallace, but is always looking for another pair of hands to help with the work. If you would like to assist contact George, Bill or Scott.

The Gift Shop space's heating system was designed for storage not occupied space, hence the need to enhance the heating there. Much of our heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems (HVAC) were not designed for today's needs and operating costs.  Nor do they always compliment each other.  In 2010 we will pay for a professional audit of the HVAC system with recommendation on how we can improve and coordinate the efficiency and comfort level in all three buildings; Church, Conkey and Palen.

Our November volunteer work day will be Saturday the 7th with focus on cleaning and preparing the grounds for winter.  The December work day(s) will be assisting the Guild in setting up and decorating the Fellowship Hall for the Guild Bazaar before December 5, and the "greening" of the church on December 20.  If you can help with either activity please contact Bill or Scott, or the Guild regarding the bazaar and the Alter Guild for the greening.

Thank you,   Bill
