Tax time is around the corner and AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is there to help low to moderate income seniors!
As in past years AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, an AARP Foundation program, is offering low to moderate income taxpayers (especially those that are 60 years and older) assistance with tax preparation. The goal of this program is to ensure that low to moderate income taxpayers receive all applicable tax credits and deductions. Visit the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Program web page and review the program. Note that there is a link to search for AARP Foundation Tax-Aide locations and information about the documents you will need. There is also information about volunteering your services.

Every state has a SHIP program, funded through an annual grant from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the federal agency that oversees the Medicare program. SHIP stands for Medicare's "State Health Insurance Assistance Program." Healthy Aging Today has created a video broadcast that reviews the SHIP program and it is posted on their website.

Social Security Survivor Benefit Facts

Social Security Pays Survivors Too
When a person who has worked and paid Social Security taxes dies, Social Security survivors benefits may be payable to -

  • A widow or widower as early as age 60;
  • A disabled widow or widower as early as age 50;
  • A widow or widower at any age taking care of the deceased's child who is receiving Social Security benefits and is under age 16 or is disabled;
  • Unmarried children under 18, or up to age 19 if attending high school full time. Under certain circumstances, benefits can be paid to stepchildren, grandchildren or adopted children;
  • Children at any age who were disabled before age 22 and remain disabled; and
  • Dependent parents age 62 or older.
  • Even if you are divorced, you still may qualify for survivors benefits.
